Why Snyder wants Gruden

Redskins owner wants a football coach and not a personnel man. Matt Bowen

Reports out of Washington are stating that Jon Gruden, and not former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan, is the most likely candidate to replace current Redskins head coach Jim Zorn in 2010—if Zorn is indeed let go. And we shouldn’t be surprised.

I have mentioned before that Mike Shanahan would be the perfect choice to take over this franchise, but that is where I was wrong—because Dan Snyder wants a football coach and that’s it.

He doesn’t want a coach like Shanahan that is going to come in and challenge his authority when it comes to personnel moves. That is not Snyder’s style. Because even as the owner, even with Vinny Cerrato under him as the so-called quasi general manager of this Redskins franchise, it is still Snyder’s team—and he is not going to let a coach take that away from him.

Daniel SnyderAPRedskins owner Daniel Snyder wants his head coach to worry strictly about coaching and not personnel decisions.

The issue with Washington has never been a lack of talent. They have plenty of good football players; but, so do the other 31 teams in this league. The real issue is how that talent is brought together. It is done in a fashion that would resemble a rookie cook—tossing ingredients into a pan until it tastes somewhat right.

However, by bringing a guy like Shanahan or Mike Holmgren into the mix—two Super Bowl coaches who have personnel ties in this league—Snyder losses that ability. It is no longer his team, and he can no longer rival what his main competitor in this business, Dallas’ Jerry Jones, does with his team.

Yes, Gruden is the guy that Snyder wants. A football mind, not unlike former ‘Skins coach Steve Spurrier. The Ball Coach was brought in to coach football, not play GM. So if the reports are true then, this is exactly what Snyder sees in Gruden.

A brilliant football mind, with a massive work ethic compared to Spurrier’s, who will find a way to make Snyder’s roster a contender. A guy, as our own Brad Biggs pointed out, who still has that passion for the game and for coaching at this level.

But, can that work? Sure it can—just not in Washington, and that is why this team is still caught in quick sand. The structure, or the chain of command, is missing. There needs to be an actual general manager in place over at Redskins Park, someone who works hand-in-hand with the head coach.

Until that happens, however, it doesn’t matter who the head coach is, because this team will continue to play up and down football with a roster of big names that doesn’t mix well together—because the owner is still picking the players.

Matt , if Gruden doesn't have a say in personnel why would he even consider that job ? Didn't him & Rich McKay clash over that ? Will he not have an opportunity somewhere in the NFL to have a say in the players he wants ? I would have to think so . Doesn't seem like a good fit at all .

I doubt Gruden would want to serve under Al Davis JR.

No. If we are firing owners Al Davis HAS to be first on that list.

Thanks for the column and your time with the Redskins--we remember you fondly in DC.

The one point I would contend is your claim that the Redskins are full of talent. This is the line us fans are fed every year about what an impressive assembly of talent they have. I'm not so sure. In my far-less-expert opinion, their talent is very overrated. Their "star" RB is out of shape and falls down when arm-tackled. Their WRs led the league in drops last year. The last impact year a DE turned in was Marco Coleman in 2000. Their DBs all ran great 40s at the combine, but can't stay with anybody when the lights come on. As someone who has watched damn near every game of the Dan Snyder-Vinny Cerrato era, I just can't figure out what everybody else sees in these guys. Man for man, they are cleary less talented than most 53's in the league.

Beyond all that, there is one area that I think you would agree they have almost no talent: O-line. I know there have been injuries, but losing Thomas and Samuels was very forseeable. Now, they will be running guys like Stephon Heyer, D'Anthony Batiste, Mike Williams and Chad Reinhart out there against the Chiefs this Sunday. All I can say is thank God KC traded Jared Allen two years ago or Jason Campbell might not make it through a half.

Even if my Skins had studs all over the roster, this shocking lack of quality depth at OL is a killer. I think this train wreck is just getting started. I hope they hire a real football guy to pick up the pieces in 2010.

I can't see Chucky in Washington, under a guy like Snyder. He's already lived that nightmare under Al Davis. Plus, in Tampa Bay, he had a big hand in player acquisitions (draft and free agents), especially after Rich McKay left and Bruce Allen was brought in. I could see Chucky in Green Bay though, especially if the Ted Thompson/Mike McCarthy tandem has a second consecutive down year in Titletown. Gruden loved his time in Green Bay as an assistant and he would get at least 4 years there to do his thing. He might get the Schottenheimer/Spurrier treatment under Snyder in Washinton though (a very short existance). Snyder spends money like a drunken sailor and also acts the same as an owner.

Daniel Snyder has ruined the greatest franchise in NFL history. I don't understand why this idiot doesn't see the damage he has done to this storied tradition. How many head coaches will it take before he sees that he is the problem? I know this would be hard but if fans stopped going to the games and buying products to the point of affecting the bottom line then he might get it. I have been a loyal fan for 37 years. I will not go to any more games and I won't watch any more games until he changes or hopefully sells the team. Don't forget, the NFL had a hand in this when they would not let John Cooke buy the team. An axe to grind?

Chuckie brings in Allen for some front office continuity and the Redskins return to their roots.

I like am hugely frustrated with the status of the team. I have been a skins fan since 1976 (Except for a brief period during my teen years when I lost my mind and rooted for the eagles for 2 seasons). At this point of the season I am ready to pull what little hair i have out. the o line is again a problem and is not going to get any better. For what ever reason the front office refuses to see that we need an O Line to get anything done. Last year we were the only team in the league that didn't have a starting O Lineman in his 20's. this year was almost as bad and to make matters worse, when Randy Thomas went out for the year the filled his roster spot with a 5th running back (who has yet to be active for a game).

Look back to our super bowl years and ask the question, what was the anchor of those teams? it was the Hogs and the coach. different Qb's, Rb's and Wr's but we had a solid o line with much of the same personel from year to year. We also had an owner that was less hands on.

In my opinion a hands on owner leads to disfunction (see Jones in Dallas and Davis in Oakland) so much so that many of the quality coaches won't come here becuse of the messed up front office. and unless we see some front office changes we are doomed. The big difference between Gibbs 1.0 and 2.0 was not him, his age or the fact that the game had changed, it was the difference in ownership and front office.

So as Mr. Snyder prepares to hire his 7th coach in 11 years and waste huge money on uneffective free agent moves while refusing to address real needs, I ask the question what is a fan to do?

I don't have the ability to switch teams, I will quit following football before I will pull for someone else but is there anything we can do?

I wonder what would happen if we the fans could send a message to mr. Snyder and say, untill things change we are done. we are not buying gear, we are not buying tickets and we are not buying concessions if we already have tickets. Could that send the desired messge? I don't know I am just asking

I there any way we the fans can be heard?

Coaching and the quarterback position may be areas of concern but they are not the core problem. That distinction goes to Cerrato and until Synder recognizes that he needs an experienced, respected, qualified operations person to run the team the Skins will be unsuccessful.

Matt,

What did you think of DeAngelo Hall's "tackle" of Jake Delhomme at the end of the game sunday? How do you think Ray Lewis would deal with that?

What would you do if you were Snyder?

Comparing Gruden's work ethic to Spurrier is an insult, if Spurrier had Gruden's wortk ethic he would have succeeded in Washington.

John Bartgis,

Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steeler fans might have something to say about that "greatest franchise in NFL history" bit.

Just sayin'

My bet is that none of these discussions are remotely serious. The Daniel is leaking high profile names to make Redskins fans think there's hope for next year, and it doesn't hurt the leverage of Shanahan, Gruden, or Holmgren to have it out there that the Daniel might be throwing big bucks their way. And I suspect that Snyder is trying to gauge what kind of interest there may be from potential coaches to come here with Snyder still in charge of personnel. A trial balloon, if you like.

What's really interesting to watch in DC is how the entire 'Skins fan base and the Washington Post have turned against the Daniel. Nobody -- NOBODY -- is blaming Zorn. With the Ravens getting the first big-play quarterback they've ever had, they're turning into the hot team in this region, and it'll be interesting to see if some of the area corporate season ticket buyers start buying Ravens boxes instead of FedEx field seats. It'll also be interesting to see if the ratings for Redskin radio broadcasts takes a hit - he owns the station, and the declining advertising revenue would hurt him. At this point, i think that financial pressure is the only thing that will get him to give up his Fantasy League approach.

I disagree with Gruden being a good fit for this team. I think Gruden is a good coach to get a talented team that has been underachieving over the top, much like his stint with Tampa. But I don't think he's good at rebuilding a franchise and I don't think he's any good at developing a QB. Not a good fit for what Washington needs right now.
