It was pretty much a sterling debut for New York Jets rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez.
APJets rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez is off to a good start.
Inspired by a pregame chat with Jets legend Joe Namath, Sanchez displayed poise and touch during the Jets' victory over the Houston Texans.
The former USC star passed for 272 yards in a 24-7 win on the road, no less.
Sanchez completed 12 of his 18 passes on third downs.
That included a 30-yard tuchdown pass to Chansi Stuckey and a 40-yard completion to tight end Dustin Keller.
"This is pretty special," Sanchez said in remarks distributed by the Jets. "It is a great way to start, but we have a lot of work to do."
And Sanchez spread the wealth, connecting with Stuckey four times for 64 yards and Keller four for 94 and Jerricho Cotchery six for 90.
Sanchez's biggest mistake, which he described as a "big-time rookie mistake," was a fourth-quarter interception returned 62 yards for a touchdown.
“I think with the amount of talent we have on this team I know I don’t have to do everything and after that costly mistake, I think it was late third quarter, the interception was inexcusable," Sanchez said. "You can’t do that and it was a big time rookie mistake."
Overall, though, Sanchez maintained his composure.
“I felt in control and I felt like I need to play smart all game and I felt like I did that minus one play," Sanchez said. "The offensive line did a great job. I really wasn’t getting touched too bad and we didn’t give up a single sack. I did feel comfortable from the start. This is a great group, a defense that’s unbelievable. It should have been a shutout so I owe them one.”
