In painstaking detail, Oakland Raiders coach Tom Cable explained why quarterback JaMarcus Russell was benched during a blowout loss to the New York Jets.
Cable said that he is certain Russell understands why he replaced him with journeyman Bruce Gradkowski after three turnovers in the first half.
"I think in talking today with him, he's pretty clear on what went on," Cable told reporters. "If I know JaMarcus, he'll learn from this and he'll grow and play like he's supposed to and capable of Sunday."
Cable reiterated that Russell will start against the San Diego Chargers on Sunday.
On the first play of the game, Russell didn't get the offense lined up in the correct formation and ignored a checkdown option before being sacked and losing a fumble.
"You wouldn't expect to have that kind of mental error on the first play of the game," Cable said.
In discussing Russell's first interception, Cable said: "There wasn't anybody there to throw the ball to.
Russell yellled at a teammate following his second interception.
"It's not up for the coach and the quarterback to debate this in the media, but when you see it on film, it's pretty obvious that would have been a tough play for Superman," Cable said.
As for how Russell reacted to the tough love, Cable said he took it well.
"Just what I would expect it to be," Cable said. "No arguing or anything like that. He's a big boy. His job is to win games and execute this offense."

"Of his meeting with the Coach, Jamarcus commented "The meeting was not my fault, he wanted it. I gave him a 50-50 chance of my showing up for the meeting, and he needs to make a better case for why the team sucks so badly around me." He then went to work on his game, by playing Madden, and ignoring everything going on around him.
Fan comments at the link, a Silverand Black, and golden, treasure trove. JaBustus is ranked 34th among 32 starters in rating. Crabtree has more catches and yards in one game than DHB has for the season.
Jamarcus is an embarassment to the team. Sports commentators make fun of the Raiders choice of qb. Its pretty bad when your team becomes the laughing stock of the NFL because of one very bad player who won't accept responsibility for his inability to think and play at the same time. Raider fans deserve much more than a JaMarcus Russell .
I went to the game Sunday, Russell got booed constantly for the quarter and a half or whatever he was out there. When I saw Gradkowski warming up on the sideline I figured Russell got yanked. I don't get it...he just seems clueless out there on the field. He misses easy reads, over throws the wr's or throws the ball behind them. Lewis Murphy was totally frustrated, after one play where Russell missed him going across the middle Murphy looked like he was clearly about to explode. I think the game just moves to fast for Russell, somehow he's got to make that adjustment. The other 21 guys on the field aren't going to slow down just for him... The defense was clearly gassed by halftime, it was a pretty warm day, probably in the 80's down on the field. The time of possession for the offense in the first half (and the rest of the game for that matter) I'm sure was ridiculously low. By the time Gradkowski came in the game, for all intents and purposes, it was already ball game over imo. When the defense is out on the field Russell just sits on the bench like a bump on a log and talks to nobody...not sure how he can lead a team that way... Attendance was really low as well...sad. There's always next week, this Sunday, whatever. Just our luck the Raiders will do something stupid like beat the Chargers in SD...
Go Raiders!!! Russell get your head out of your @ss and get your sh1t together!!!
So he made all these awful mistakes that even a LITTLE preparation would've prevented... yet he's STILL starting next week. Someone explain the logice behind that to me because I don't get it.
Jeff, the logic is that the Raiders aren't gonna rattle off 8 or 9 victories in a row to make the playoffs so it's sink or swim time for J-Rus. He's got the rest of the year to improve on the job and try to resemble an actually QB. He's got that time because we have to face facts: Bruce Gradowski is the back up QB. A journeyman with few starts that's been bounced around the league and has a career completion percentage in the low 50's.
Obviously Bruce isn't a long-term solution in Oakland so the rest of the year is to see if Russell can be (he can't).
Playing Jamarcus makes sense if you consider that next year will be uncapped, which is the perfect time to dump Jamarcus. If he doesn't improve (which is about as likely as Gisele leaving Tom Brady for me), then you can take the entire salary cap hit for him in an uncapped year.

And one more thing, Rex Ryan looks like he's in his third trimester.

He got booed off the field, from what I hear. Black Hole denizens expect better. Get someone who has a love for football in there. No heart or head for the game can't be made up with arm strength.
