The San Diego Chargers claimed running back Marcus Mason off waivers from the Washington Redskins, the team announced.

Mason has previously been on the Baltimore Ravens, Washington Redskins and New York Jets practice squads.

In nine games last season for the Redskins, Mason rushed for 127 yards on 32 carries.

“We’ve followed his progress through his young career, and when he came available, we decided to give him an opportunity to earn a spot with the Chargers," Chargers general manager A.J. Smith said in a statement.

Mason, 25, is a former University of Illinois player who transferred to Youngstown State and rushed for 2,739 yards and 31 touchdowns in two seasons. That included a school-record 1,847 yards as a senior when he was named Gateway Conference Offensive Player of the Year.
