INDIANAPOLIS - Kansas City Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli said today that the team has been working to re-sign wide receiver Chris Chambers, outside linebacker Mike Vrabel and safety Mike Brown, among other pending free agents.
The Chiefs completed deals with running back Kolby Smith and quarterback Matt Gutierrez earlier this week.
'We’ve had conversations with most all of our players that are free agents, including some restricted free agents, too,' Pioli said today at the NFL scouting combine. "We’ve had conversations with all of them. We’re trying to keep some guys in the fold. That’s a big part of free agency as well.
"It’s not only going out and signing other players. It’s also trying to hold on to the ones you want to keep here as well.'
Pioli predicted that the Chiefs will explore the free agent market despite the new environment of the uncapped year.
'We were active last year,' Pioli said. 'What happens sometimes is you try to be active and you don’t always get deals done. We’re going to try to improve our team and supplement our team with free agents this year, as we did last year. We’ll be involved with free agency. Absolutely.'
Following a 4-12 season, Pioli made the point that the team can get better in every area, including at general manager.
