Now that San Diego Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson has been released, could New York Jets running back Thomas Jones be next on the chopping block?
Unlike Tomlinson, Jones is still playing at a very high level.
He rushed for 1,402 yards last season.
However, as the New York Daily News points out, Jones, 32, is due a $3 million roster bonus. Plus, there's a $2.8 million base salary due in 2010.
Although the prospect of an uncapped season could help Jones, there's his age, salary and the presence of a talented younger running back on the roster in Shonn Greene.
Per the report, Jones is likely going to be cut if Leon Washington makes a full recovery from his leg surgery.
In the Jets' case, it's not as cut-and-dry a choice as the Chargers opting to cut a fading Tomlinson today.

Aaron. Reading both your report and Cimini's I think you are taking Cimini's analysis and painting it as fact here ...
NFP: "Per the report, Jones is likely going to be cut if Leon Washington makes a full recovery from his leg surgery."
NYDN: "A lot of the decision could depend on Leon Washington's recovery from leg surgery. If they feel confident that Washington will be 100% by the season, Jones is a goner. But that's a big 'if.'"
We won't know about Leon until the Summer and he is an unrestricted free agent so we could lose him right after we cut Jjones
They must keep Washington at all costs, so Thomas may be the odd man out. Thats the way that the business end of it is just what drives decisions in the NFL today.

Rex Ryan comments, please! What is a Jets story, without his glib candor?
