Team hired Bruce Allen after Vinny Cerrato resigned Aaron Wilson
Did the Washington Redskins comply with the Rooney Rule intended to promote diversity in the hiring process for coaching and front office positions?
Yes, they probably did.
Whether or not they always intended to hire Bruce Allen to replace Vinny Cerrato is fairly cut and dry.
What isn't as clear is who the Redskins may have interviewed to comply with league rules requiring at least one minority candidate be considered for the job.
The Redskins naturally aren't saying who they did or didn't interview, but it's logical to deduce that they did enough to meet the basic league requirements.
Does that truly embrace what Dan Rooney had intended? No, probably not.
That doesn't mean that the Redskins have done anything differently from many other teams that have already zeroed in on who they want to hire.
With the Redskins keeping Cerrato's exit and the arrival of his replacement under wraps from the public and media, it also may have kept some potential job candidates, minority and otherwise, from entering their hats into the ring.
That's unfair, but it's how the system works.
Like almost any high profile job in the NFL, teams have a short list always prepared and this one was likely in the works for a long time.
What's unfortunate is that by not having an open application process, some good candidates are getting passed over while executives are shuffled and recycled from team to team.
