San Diego Chargers general manager A.J. Smith has been watching his football team closely, and he doesn't like what he sees.

He was extremely disturbed by how the Chargers played during a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

And he called out his players about not playing tough enough on a consistent basis.

“Absolutely embarrassing,” Smith told the San Diego Union-Tribune. “Everything is wrong with it right now. I'm not the least bit happy in a lot of areas. I've seen us be tough and physical to soft and bewildered.”

With the Chargers trying to chase the undefeated Denver Broncos, who are two games ahead in the AFC West, something needs to change. Quickly.

“If this trend continues, we'll be 8-8 or worse and certainly out of the division,” Smith said. “We won't have the credentials. It's not going well for the San Diego Chargers and we'd better get our act together quickly.

“We need to complete games. We've gained absolutely no ground over last year. I'm extremely disappointed.”

Teams go where they are lead. The track record for the coach speaks for itself, ask any Redskins fan...

As Lombardi always harps: GM's should just shut up during the season. This is an embarressing comment from Smith.

The reason the Chargers lost is because their front seven blows. Merriman stinks. Their NT and one DE aren't even NFL caliber players. They have below average ILB's. Catillo and Phillips are players, but not "playmakers".

Smith built this front seven and neglected the nose tackle spot and put all his eggs into the Jamal Williams basket (who's 34). He has no one to blame but himself.

Chargers are a "Strong GM" team under the Spanos ownership; they will never bring in a coach who will challenge the GM. Makes it hard to have a leader as a head coach. Not impossible--the Titans have managed--but hard.

Yup as the comments on top, I watched Norv coach the Skins for 8 miserable seasons. Always, mediocre, always a slow start, never getting the most out of his players. Exactly what the Chargers have become. It's no coincidence. He took over a 14-2 team, that went to 11-5, then 8-8, and now most likely 7-9. Norv has to go. Bring in Cowher.

Nice Accountability AJ.

HE came up with the menu, bought the ingredients, and he is blaming the cooks and the waiters because the recipe SUCKS.

Any Leader who does not share in the blame is not a leader.
