Virginia's Chris Cook impresses Aaron Wilson
It was a strong morning for Tennessee blue-chip safety Eric Berry, and a surprisingly pedestrian showing for University of Florida cornerback Joe Haden.
Weighing in at 211 pounds, Berry, the top-ranked safety, ran a scorching 4.4 and a 4.46 in the 40-yard dash. He also bench pressed 225 pounds 19 times.
Meanwhile, Haden, who's regarded as the consensus leader of the cornerback class after a stellar career for the Gators, had a disappointing time trial.
His times were much slower than he expected after forecasting 4.4 times during interviews.
He wound up running a 4.57 and a 4.6.
The times are unofficial, but it's still not good. A cornerback has to be able to run fast. Haden plays fast on film.
During the NFL Network broadcast, analyst Deion Sanders declared that Haden didn't have a good stance and that may have led to a slow start.
"First of all, it was a horrible stance," Sanders said. "I don't know what he's being taught. Sometimes, you've just got to let a guy run. Tweak him a little bit, but don't try to change everything."
Oklahoma State cornerback Perrish Cox, who was called an enigma by Mike Mayock, ran 4.53 and 4.57.
Here are some other notable performances:
Virginia cornerback Chris Cook had a 11-foot broad jump and ran in the 4.47 and 4.43 range.
Vanderbilt cornerback Myron Lewis ran a 4.43.
USC safety Taylor Mays put up 24 reps in the bench press.
Sanders was critical of Mays' lack of ideal flexibility. Several NFL teams have told National Football Post that Mays might be best suited to linebacker.
A.J. Jefferson had 4.43 and 4.45 clockings.
Wake Forest safety Brandon Ghee bolted upfield for a 4.37 and a 4.39. Very impressive.
Alabama corner Javier Arenas had a 4.52, pulling a hamstring.
South Florida safety Nate Allen didn't work out due to a quadriceps injury.
