Cleveland Browns team president Mike Holmgren doesn't envision another quarterback competition unfolding between Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson.

That was a disastrous decision last year by coach Eric Mangini.

Holmgren's preference is to pick a quarterback and do whatever's necessary to make him successful.

He indicated that stance during an interview on the Dan Patrick radio program, but didn't say whether Anderson or Quinn would be departing the roster between now and training camp.

"I won't tell you that right now," Holmgren said. "They're both here right now. We'll see how it goes. I'm not a big believer in that competition stuff. We better make up our mind before we go to camp and then put our resources into one guy."

Both players have issues besides their lackluster performance last season.

Anderson is expensive to retain due to a roster bonus scheduled for March.

Quinn is recovering from a foot injury that's expected to sideline him for the majority of the minicamp schedule.

Of course, there's also another X-factor.

Will the Browns try to pull off a trade for an established quarterback such as Donovan McNabb?

That rumor just won't die even though McNabb is entrenched in Philadelphia
