Although the NFL is monitoring New York Jets wide receiver Braylon Edwards' misdemeanor assault case, it's unlikely that he'll be suspended by the league office.

An NFL spokesman told the New York Post that under the personal conduct policy, "when a player like Braylon, with no prior history of conduct issues, has been charged, we wait for a court resolution. Then we would review the facts for any possible discipline."

Edwards is accused of punching nightclub promoter Edward Givens, a friend of basketball player LeBron James.

Since the case remains pending, it's unlikely that the NFL will have a verdict to contemplate potential punishment for some time to come.

The Jets issued a statement Monday noting that they were aware of the allegations before they traded for Edwards, adding that the wide receiver "has been cooperative with authorities, and we will allow the legal process to run its course."
