The New York Jets' relationship with wide receiver Braylon Edwards figures to ultimately become a long-term one.

Edwards has made the most out of his fresh start in New York after being acquired via a trade from the Cleveland Browns.

He has caught 13 passes for 192 yards and two touhdowns.

After wearing out his welcome in Cleveland, Edwards has been impressing the coaching staff with his willingness to fight for extra yards. That was on display on his score against the Miami Dolphins.

‘‘It’s a new attitude I have playing football," Edwards said Monday. "Being in a place where I’m happy and comfortable, that’s the kind of effort and desire that I have for this team.

‘‘Those are the plays that I want to continue to make to show these guys that I belong and that I’m happy I’m here. I really like this situation. I like the organization from top-to-bottom. I like the city. I’m trying to do everything I can to prove who I am and I’m the guy that they need.’’

Facing a misdemeanor charge of assault in Cleveland, Edwards has stayed out of trouble in New York.

Edwards is heading into his restricted free agent year unless a new collective bargaining agreement is struck.

The Jets seem amenable to striking a new deal with Edwards after the season.

‘‘I think when Braylon came here he was looking for a fresh start,’’ Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum told the Newark Star-Ledger. ‘‘We had a great talk and he has really lived up to what we talked about. We’re really happy with him both on and off the field.

‘‘Braylon is a part of our team now and we expect him to be in the future. After the season, we’ll sit down and talk. We hope he’s with us for years to come.’’
