Team to cut Jones on Friday Aaron Wilson
The New York Jets' decision to cut veteran running back Thomas Jones on Friday has caused some backlash in the locker room.
Jones was an accomplished, popular player who rushed for a career-high 1,402 yards last season, so the reaction is understandable.
"I can tell you, it's not going to be a popular move in the locker room," one player told the New York Daily News. "We loved T.J. The man loved the game and put it all on the line only to get dumped after his best season. I think you should reward players for performance. You dump him but give Vernon (Gholston) another shot? Doesn't make sense."
It's an uncapped year, but the Jets didn't want to pay the 31-year-old a $3 million roster bonus next week as well as a $2.8 million base salary in 2010.
They are turning the position over to Shonn Greene full-time.
"It just goes to show the business side of the game, when such a productive guy like T.J. is released," offensive guard Alan Faneca said in an e-mail. "To be so close last year, and then for T.J. not to be there with us going after the ring again is what hurts."
Added offensive lineman Damien Woody: "Some players bring things to the table that you can't put a price on, and T.J. is one of those guys."
The Jets could wind up regretting this decision if Greene doesn't fulfill expectations and Leon Washington doesn't make a speedy comeback from a gruesome broken leg.

Chargers could use a vet RB with some legs, grit and something to prove. LT sadly has lost his legs.
Mike,
Good idea. He would be an ideal replacement for LT in SD.

Pats should cut Taylor sign Jones - Put Maroney out for trade - even if you get an extra 5th or 6th rounder for him.
