Cleveland Browns owner Randy Lerner said he isn't planning to fire coach Eric Mangini during the bye week following the Browns' 1-7 start.
However, Lerner did acknowledge that he wants to hire a football czar of sorts to fix the dysfunctional Browns.
APEric Mangini
"There's absolutely no question about that," Lerner told reporters. "The highest priority that I have is a strong, credible, serious leader within the building to guide decisions in a far more conspicuous, open transparent way.
"I can maybe defend decisions by saying I've sought advice and I've brought people in, and we've gone to see people, and I think my highest priority is to have a stable figure that represents the voice that explains the decisions."
The Browns recently hired former quarterback Bernie Kosar as a consultant.
Lerner said that the Browns' quarterback debacle "doesn't look sensible."
Lerner is still paying roughly $20 million to former general manager Phil Savage and former coach Romeo Crennel.
Another change would cost him millions of dollars.
It's unclear whether the Browns could be in position to hire former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher after pursuing him during the last hiring cycle without success. Cowher is also frequently mentioned as a potential replacement for Carolina Panthers coach John Fox if he's fired.

Isn't that what your new Coach and GM are supposed to do?
Lerner's going to spend a couple million so he won't have to spend more millions replacing this disastrous hire.
4 more great years coming in Cleveland.
