INDIANAPOLIS -- Overtime in the NFL could be taking on a new format.

The NFL is pondering changes to the current sudden-death format.

Under a proposal that's expected to be voted on next month at the NFL owners meetings, per the Washington Post, teams would no longer be able to win a playoff game on a field on the first possession of overtime.

A team could win on the opening possession of overtime if it scores a touchdown.

However, a field goal scored would allow the other team to get a chance to win the game with a touchdown or tie with a field goal.

In the event of a tied game with a field goal, the next score would win the game under the sudden-death format.

And if none of the teams score on the opening possesion, the game would be played under the sudden-death format.

"This is a concept being discussed and to be taken up [at the] league meeting in late March," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello wrote on his Twitter account.
