Extra timeout allowed final play where Cribbs was injured Aaron Wilson
They blew it.
That's the explanation offered by NFL vice president of officiating Mike Pereira during an NFL Network appearance for how the Cleveland Browns were able to call a fourth timeout in the second half of their 16-0 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
"Well, I mean, it happened because we as a group -- as a crew -- failed to record," Pereira said. "Everybody on the field basically forgot to record the penalty -- I mean, the timeout -- and the scoreboard did, too."
The scoreboard showed one more timeout with 1:55 remaining. The extra timeout, of course, led to the final play where Browns wide receiver Joshua Cribbs got blasted by Ravens defensive lineman Dwan Edwards and was carted off the field.
The timeout gaffe was simply bad.
"All our fault," Pereira said. "It's not the scoreboard operator's responsibility, it's our responsibility to record all timeouts and we're going to initiate a change over these situations.
"When a team uses all their timeouts we now -- the referee has to go over and tell the head coach ... These types of administrative things should never happen, and we accept responsibility."

Looks like the refs were playing down to the Browns' level as well.
