Coach declines to discuss Asomugha Aaron Wilson
INDIANAPOLIS -- New York Jets coach Rex Ryan is normally a no-holds barred guy with no topic considered off-limits.
When it came to discussing Oakland Raiders cornerback Nmandi Asomugha's comment at the Pro Bowl that he would like to join the Jets and form a tandem with Darrelle Revis, Ryan wasn't going to touch it with a 10-foot pole.
"Ah, there we go. I get myself in enough trouble," Ryan said today at the NFL scouting combine. "I don't really need your help to get me in trouble. I think I will pass on talking about any player that is under contract.”
Ryan acknowledged that he would like to upgrade at cornerback opposite Revis. However, he didn't make it sound like a dire concern.
Meanwhile, Ryan made plenty of jokes about his girth, especially where his large stomach was exposed at a hockey game, and discussed the incident where he was fined $50,000 for flipping off a Miami Dolphins fan at an MMA event.
Here are a few of his comments:
"I appreciate everybody’s interest in making sure that I was still in the papers and all those other things – the video. Hey, I am working on those abs a little bit I think. The problem that happened with that wardrobe… I was at the hockey game - and first off all I would like to say USA, let’s go take care of business, really proud of the way they are playing – but what happened, I thought I had the fighting strap attached to the t-shirt. Apparently I didn’t. Big mistake. But I appreciate everybody having such a special interest in that."
On his notoriety and the hockey game: "Say like yeah, afterwards, yeah, absolutely. I was surprised. I am watching ESPN and I’m like, ‘Ooooh! That is not a real good shot’. Yeah, I don’t know. That is kind of crazy. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I get hit on all the time by women. But nah, it is kind of funny. That is part of the deal, especially in New York, you get the New York media but it is the greatest city in the world.
"All last year I used to go into New York all the time. Nobody recognized me or anything else. I guess they assumed the head coach of the Jets wouldn’t be wearing a throwback or something. But that is just who I am. It is not going to change. I am going to be who I am and I am still going to take the train into the city and all that kind of stuff and I am still going to go to sporting events even though it
seems like I mess up all the time. But I am going to be who I am and be true to myself and that is the way it is going to be as long as I am a coach.”
