Tyrone Carter returns interception for a touchdown Aaron Wilson
Pittsburgh Steelers safety Ryan Clark wanted badly to play against the Denver Broncos, but ultimately was held out due to concerns about his health because of his rare blood disorder that's affected by the altitude in Denver.
With replacement Tyrone Carter in the game, Clark's backup came through in a big way with two interceptions.
He returned the first one 48 yards for a touchdown as the defending Super Bowl champions defeated the Broncos, 28-10.
Clark nearly died after playing in Denver two years ago when he needed surgeries to remove his spleen and gall bladder.
"Ryan likes to play," Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. "He's probably hacked off at me that I didn't play him, but he will get over it."
From his standpoint, Clark was happy that his replacement excelled.
He's also eager to get back in the starting lineup.
"I was excited for him," Clark said. "It was a big win. He did an awesome job. His first interception really put us in the game. I might be like Wally Pipp. I'd better get back fast."
And Carter is simply happy that his friend is healthy
"I'll tell you, Ryan is like a brother to me," he said. "We've been in this thing together for a long time The bond is so tight between all of us.
"But to know that he can't play today and knowing that he wanted to be out there, I just wanted to make sure that I went out there and played for him, and let him know I'm there for him, that we were still going to be all right."
