Now that the Pittsburgh Steelers have locked up nose guard Casey Hampton and kicker Jeff Reed with a new $21.3 million contract and a $2.814 million franchise tag, respectively, they have another free agent on their negotiating agenda.

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Steelers want to re-sign free agent safety Ryan Clark.

"Ryan is one of the three starters ... we've taken care of one, moved closer with another and we'll continue to talk," Steelers director of football operations Kevin Colbert said. "With all of these guys, they want to stay, we want them to stay. Usually, when you have that type of mindset on both sides, it helps get deals done."

Clark is willing to stay in Pittsburgh at a slightly reduced price.

"He's offering himself at hometown discount, so to speak," agent Joel Turner said. "We're not asking for more than most people would. Keep in mind, Ryan is the best free safety not only in unrestricted free agency but restricted free agency.

"He's the best free safety in the business ... he does a marvelous job of quarterbacking the defense. This is not a situation where this is some average guy. Ryan is superior at his position."

-Guess they forgot about a FS named Ed Reed.

well i hope to god he is the best in the league, hahahaha, if they sign him who is barely 30 it will open us up to a OL in the first round, secondary in the second, and OL or DL in the 3rd. earl thomas sounds good, but we have won a super bowl with clark, and thomas may not be that good. so an OL in the first with clarks signing. and they should also sign a veteran to a one year deal with no cap in the league. its sad to see deshae leave. but burnett and lewis will get there shot, and with polomalu back that will help william gay out and the secondary will be better for sure. ben busted out 4300 yds, mendenhall is great and young, but getting willie back will give us a 2 headed monster on top of our surging passing game, with improvements to the OL which played well enough to begin with this would be great, but if willie does go im comfortable with moore, not the best but can take 9 carries per game and catch the ball well. but they damn well better go OL or secondary in the first and second with a verteran OL signing to a one year deal. it will be a tough schedule this year but in the senerios ive stated, this team can only go up.
