USC safety Taylor Mays just made himself some money this morning at the NFL scouting combine, clocking a staggering 4.24 unofficial time in the 40-yard dash.
His second 40-yard dash was a 4.34, a discrepancy. However, he seemed to not get off to a smooth start on that one.
Mays also registered a 41-inch vertical leap.
Mays is a 6-foot-3, 230-pounder with destructive hitting ability.
However, his lack of instincts and intercepting only five interceptions in four seasons raises eyebrows.
"I know he's a specimen," NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock said. "I know he's an unbelievable athlete. I know he's a freak. I get all that. What you've got to see on tape is him making a play. You've got two picks in three years," Mayock said. "You've got to get around the football more often."
However, Mays seemed to win over Deion Sanders: "If a man runs a 4.24 here at 231 pounds, all these egos in these bleachers are thinking, 'I can work with that.'"
Sanders makes a valid point. When the physical tools are there NFL teams are going to jump on him.
Could former USC coach Pete Carroll, now with the Seattle Seahawks, be interested?
