INDIANAPOLIS -- Houston Texans general manager Rick Smith has held discussions at the NFL scouting combine with wide receiver Kevin Walter's agent.
However, the Texans don't seem likely to lock him up to a new contract at this point.
We're trying to see if we can retain him, but the unfortunate part of free agency is you can't keep everybody," Smith said today at the NFL scouting combine. "When you talk about putting your team together, you have to make tough decisions and sometimes you have to let players go you otherwise wouldn't want to."
Smith said he met with Walter's agent Thursday night.
If no deal is worked out before March 29, Walter will be one of the more accomplished unrestricted free agent wideouts on the market.
"Kevin is a big part of our team," Smith said. "We would like to have Kevin back. We have articulated that to him as recently as last night."

I'm just trying to remember exactly who Washington has for their #2 WR. He was dinged a little bit last season, But make no mistake about it he is an excellent #2. Blocks, runs exact routes, great hands. He's a pros pro. He has been a good soldier for the Texans. And I'm wishing we could keep him. He deserves this pay day. We just don't have the cap room to keep everyone.
