INDIANAPOLIS -- The Thomas Jones era is over in New York.

According to the New York Daily News, the Jets are going to cut the prolific running back after he declined to restructure his contract.

Per the report, the formal announcement is coming in a few days.

Jones was due a grand total of $5.8 million in 2010, including a pending $3 million roster bonus he won't be collecting.

Jones, 31, rushed for a career-high 1,402 yards on 331 carries last season.

Jones' age, salary and Shonn Greene's emergence all combined to cost the veteran runner his position on the team despite manufacturing the best personal season of a proud career.

Jones was worn out by the postseason. The pounding he dished out and absorbed took a toll and was undoubtedly a major factor in the Jets' decision beyond the money issue.

4.2 ypc and 14 TD's last year. Very healthy numbers for the workhorse (and supposedly over-the-hill) back. I could see him producing very well for some team in a committee. Steelers, anyone? How about Seattle or the Bucs?

TJ was a great Jet - a great successor to Curtis "my favorite" Martin. But I'm sure he still wants to start - and earn starter $. Safe bet the Jets will throw it a bit more this year (how could they not?!), and they've got a dynamic 1-2 punch with Greene & Leon #29.

So Jones moves on and the Jets need depth at RB.
