Evidently, the Cincinnati Bengals have a difference of opinion when it comes to wide receiver Matt Jones.

Although the Bengals signed Matt Jones to a one-year, prove-it contract, his workout was reportedly subpar.

According to Yahoo! Sports, citing a pair of team sources, neither player was impressive.

Matt Jones, an imposing target with a history of violations of the NFL substance-abuse policy who ran a 4.37 in the 40-yard dash at the NFL scouting combine, struggled during the workout.

“It was one of the worst workouts I have ever seen,” a team source said. “I don’t care how fast his 40 time is or was, he’s a slow-twitch athlete.”

Seconding the notion that Jones won't be a good replacement for the late Chris Henry.

“He obviously has great size, but not even that is much of an advantage when you don’t move very fast,” another team source said. “He’s not really the solution to what we need.”

As for former Dallas Cowboys cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones, whom the team passed on, he didn't receive glowing reviews, either.

“He worked out, but he wasn’t really ready to work out, if you know what I’m saying,” a source said. “If he really wants to get back in the league, I don’t know what he’s been doing to get ready for it.”

The Bengals were nonplussed about Jones' replies to questions about his well-documented string of off-field problems.

“There wasn’t a lot of consistency with his explanations,” the source said.

Reading between the lines on this one, it sounds like the coaches and personnel people aren't too hot on Matt Jones.

However, the ultimate decision-maker in Cincinnati is owner Mike Brown, who also operates as the general manager.

At 6 foot 6 inches the size and scale of Matt Jones may make it appear that his stride turnover is slower. He does take less strides per second than a smaller sprinter. His distance covered per stride is greater. But you don't run a 4.37 during your youth without being blessed with fast twitch muscle fibers. Although Matt is lacking directional change greatness, the Bengals are looking for size and top speed to keep defenders away from the ball thrown up for grabs.
