OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- The Baltimore Ravens assigned the low tender to restricted free agent backup quarterback Troy Smith, according to his agent.
The former Heisman Trophy winner from Ohio State was drafted in the fifth round by Baltimore, so the Ravens would receive a fifth-round pick if anyone signed him to an offer sheet and they declined to match.
Smith's agent, Ralph Cindrich, has requested a trade, but no market has materialized yet for Smith.
Ravens coach John Harbaugh said at the NFL scouting combine that the team wants to retain Smith as the backup to starter Joe Flacco, but wouldn't rule anything out if another team wanted to make them an offer.
Smith has played well in relief of Flacco and running the Ravens' version of the Wildcat offense.

Did the Browns just get a new QB cheap?
Somebody will buy this kid at this price.
He can't be worse than what the Browns have now, and he's local.
Seems like a dumb move by the usually astute Ravens. Why not give him at least a second round tender and then negotiate with teams that want him? Fifth round pick seems like a real bargain for him. It wouldn't be the worse move in the world for the Redskins to make a move on him.
I agree with meateater. I can think of many teams that need a QB (rams, raiders, seachickens, browns, etc.) and could afford a 5th round draft pick.

Smith would be cheaper than Gradkowski at this time. The silence of the Rams would indicate for certain they want to get Bradford?
