San Diego Chargers safety Eric Weddle has sprained his medial collateral ligament and will probably be sidelined for the next two games, coach Norv Turner announced today.

Shawne MerrimanAPThe San Diego Chargers are banged-up.

Under that timetable, Weddle would be back by the Chargers' Dec. 20 game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Meanwhile, Turner is thinking about resting outside linebacker Shawne Merriman this week against the hapless Cleveland Browns.

Merriman didn't finish last week's game because of foot tendinitis.

Also, center Nick Hardwick (ankle) might return this week.

The outlook is good for defensive end Luis Castillo (calf) and linebacker Kevin Burnett (concussion).

"Eric Weddle has a knee strain," Turner said in remarks distributed by the team. "It’s probably a two-week injury, a chance of him getting back after this week but it could go into three weeks. Kevin Burnett had a concussion. He’s doing fine today. He’s passed the test they give him and he should be fine to practice Wednesday.

"Obviously Shawne Merriman played about 15 plays and came out. The foot was bothering him. We’re just going to treat it the best we can and proceed with him. We’ll see how he is at the end of the week. Nick Hardwick practiced last week and had his best week. If he can do the same this week, then he’s got a chance of dressing for the game and playing.”
