The Green Bay Packers could be dealt a serious blow as linebacker Nick Barnett could miss the remainder of the season with a wrist injury.
Greg Bedard of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that sources indicate Barnett will need surgery on his right wrist. When he has the surgery, it will end his season and Bedard writes that “it is likely it will be needed before the end of the season.”
A source with knowledge of the situation said discussion has centered around whether or not Barnett has suffered the same freak injury that ended Brian Urlacher’s season a year ago. Urlacher suffered a dislocated wrist at Green Bay in the season opener and the Chicago Bears middle linebacker underwent surgery the next morning that ended his season. The injury was sensitive to nerves in his hand and therefore he simply couldn’t put a cast on the wrist and play. Doctors said the injury is most commonly suffered in car accidents. Football, of course, is a game notorious for its violent collisions.
Whether or not Barnett is dealing with the exact same injury is not known. Bedard indidates there is a possibility Barnett could delay surgery until after the season. He is expected to seek additional medical opinions, and the Packers could have an answer Thursday morning, per one source.
