From Adam Schefter of NFL.com:

Indianapolis’ backfield has been thrown for a loss.

Colts running back Joseph Addai has a slightly torn hamstring that is expected to sideline him two to four weeks, according to a Colts source, and rookie running back Mike Hart has a torn ACL that landed him on the season-ending injured reserve list, Indianapolis coach Tony Dungy confirmed Wednesday.

To help make up for the absence of Addai and Hart, the Colts re-signed running back Clifton Dawson, who spent 13 games with the Colts last season, and promoted rookie running back Chad Simpson from their practice squad.

Dungy said he envisions using Dominic Rhodes, Dawson and Simpson on Sunday at Green Bay. Dungy also said he does not think Addai’s injury is of the long-term variety, and it wouldn’t surprise Dungy if Addai could be lobbying to play by the end of the week.

But before that happens, Addai also is expected to seek a second opinion on his hamstring injury. As much as he would like to play, he also knows that if he comes back too soon from it, he risks aggravating it and sidelining himself even longer. So the inside word is, look for Addai to miss anywhere from two to four weeks, though it probably will turn out to be less time than more.

As a long-time Colts fan, I'm not worried about this. Reason? Dom Rhodes and our struggling offensive line. This hearkens back to 2001 when Edge, a shifty patient runner, went down around week 6 and an undrafted rookie named Rhodes came in and ran for 1,000 yards. That season the offensive line was suspect and Peyton was sacked more times (29) than he had been before or since then. Dom's straight-ahead, quick to the hole running style was perfect for a line that couldn't hold blocks. This year, we lose our starting guards, left tackle and center to start the season. Jeff Saturday is back, and Howard Mudd has done and amazing job to keep the line together with otherwise middling talent, but it's the same problem -- can't hold blocks. So now we lose Addai, another shifty patient runner, and Dom's running style is welcomed. Haven't seen Simpson play much, but I like what I've seen from Dawson; here's the pre-draft report on him last year:

"Running back that re-wrote the Ivy League record books after tranferring from Northwestern University. Consistently timed in the 4.4 range. Is a tough, north-south runner that gets by with his vision and speed. Has remarkable hands, as he rarely ever fumbled in his 4 year career at Harvard. Is also a willing and able blocker. Will most likely be a third down back/return specialist in the NFL."
