From Rich Cimini of The New York Daily News:

Erik Ainge is back. Did anyone know he was missing?

The second-year quarterback, who missed a big chunk of the off-season program because of a mysterious "personal" reason (Rex Ryan's word), returned a couple of days ago, according to the Jets.

Do you think his return is tied to the fact that the Jets drafted a QB in the first round (some guy named Sanchez) and signed a rookie free agent (Harvard's Chris Pizzotti)? I'm just throwing that out there.

In case you're wondering, Ainge isn't allowed to participate in this weekend's rookie minicamp - only rooks and first-year players.

I'm a big Tennessee Vols fan, but I was never a big "Erik Ainge" fan. But... that's COLLEGE. This is the NFL. Like some people say that Vince Young was a great COLLEGE quarterback who has trouble translating that ability to the NFL, I think the opposite of Ainge. I think Ainge's abilities are best suited for the NFL and not as effective at the college level.

I actually think Ainge could be groomed to play in the NFL. He's smart. He's a natural athlete. He doesn't have the scrambling ability of, say, Vince Young or Jay Cutler, but he can throw. He reminds me of Kerry Collins, Matt Schaub, or Jake Delhomme. Collins/Schaub/Delhomme are effective... and smart! I halfway think it would be worth having Ainge on the roster as a backup QB or at least on the practice squad. He would work hard. It's in his blood. He takes his legacy seriously, I believe.
