FROM MATT BOWEN:
Sources close to The National Football Post have informed us that New England Patriots Vice President of Player Personnel, Scott Pioli, has accepted an offer to become Head of Football Operations for the Kansas City Chiefs. This ends weeks of speculation as to where Pioli would end up, or if he would stay on board with the Patriots for the 2009 season.

Upon his departure, the Patriots will replace Pioli with Nic Cesario, who was serving as the Director of Player Personnel for New England. This does not come as a surprise as New England believes in growing executive talent from within its own organization.
Pioli, who has been with the Patriots for nine seasons and three Super Bowl Championships, won the George Young Executive of the Year award in 2004 and 2005.
Pioli comes to Kansas City after in year in which the Chiefs struggled to finish with a record of 2-14, good for last place in the AFC West. Pioli inherits a team that has a disgruntled super star running back in Larry Johnson, a revolving door at the quarterback position, but is led by a young nucleus of talent on the defensive side of the football. First off for Pioli, however, is to decide the fate of head coach Herman Edwards and his possible successor.
We will continue to follow any breaking news out of Kansas City.
Michael,
Who do you like for the coaching job?
frentz and spagnuolo.....
which is a better fit?
i love Kirk...dont know Steve...
Great Hire!
could you go into detail about the young nucleus on defense, they may be young but only the corners, Flowers and Carr, figure to be a part of the future. Dorsey was a bust, and he doesn't really have a position if the team switches to a 3-4, which has been speculated, same for Tamba Hali. As for the linebackers, Derrick Johnson has a big name, but like the rest of the bunch he has been a major disappointment.
Will he be able to find enough player development folks to buy into a Patriots style system (looking for fit and value within a particulary system rather than "best overall" football player) and will Ferentz, Spagnuolo, or any other potential coach be able to work with Pioli to build a coherent system? It seems that Pioli, Belichick, et al. succeeded by sticking to a single system and doing a great job scouting players who fit that system. That kind of discipline is hard to replicate. It will be interesting to see Scott try to build that in KC.
This certainly may open up a new trading partner possibility for a franchised Cassel...
I had been hearing of Ferentz through media channels and rabid KC fans.
Hey, maybe Herm lands with the Lions?
Shanahan is KC's new HC. Believe it.
