STRENGTHS - Ford is a very quick runner and shows the natural speed to be a big play threat. He has the initial quickness once he is handed the ball and very quick footwork to bounce to the outside if there is nothing for him up the middle. Shows good ball security and is not afraid to take the contact, will lower his shoulder and drive his legs forward.
WEAKNESSES - While Ford has the speed to get down the field, he does not show the ability to make crisp cuts and did not appear to have a 2nd gear. He is not appear to be an elusive runner and he needs to improve his vision down the field. As a kick returner he needs to improve on field awareness as shown in the Arkansas game where he caught the kickoff and stepped out of bounds on the catch, giving his team poor field position.
SUMMARY - Ford is a much better east/west runner than north/south. He has the quickness and speed to bounce to the outside quickly and if he is given space his speed gives him the opportunity to gain solid yardage. He does not show the ability to break tackles and is not an elusive runner in the open field. Ford will lower his shoulder and take the contact to gain the couple extra yards. In the tape that was viewed Ford was in there to run the ball and did not see enough route running or blocking to really get an idea of his play. As a kick returner his pure speed will give him an opportunity at the next level, however he cannot make the same mistake he did in the Arkansas game and needs to improve his read on the kick coverage as he ran out of the endzone when he should have taken the knee. Overall, Ford's quickness and speed will get him a look at the next level, but he will struggle to become more than a backup.
