STRENGTHS - Watkins has good instincts and sniffs plays out well. He has a very good burst on closing on the ball carrier and has the quickness to attack in backside pursuit. When asked to bring pressure he has the ability to turn the corner quickly and get to the quarterback with success.
WEAKNESSES - Watkins lacks the ability to maintain coverage. He showed the tendency to get beat and turned around and beat on the deep ball. Watkins does not seem to play with full effort at times and will tend to give up on a play. His tackling is extremely inconsistent and can be very poor at times, showing the inability to wrap up. Showed that he will shy away from contact.
SUMMARY - Watkins was a solid college player whose game just does not transfer well to the next level. He tends to give up on plays and will get beat on routes by getting turned around and does not have the explosion to get back quickly when he is turned around. Watkins proved that he does have the instincts and can read a play very well. He has a very good burst to the ball carrier and has the quickness to make a play in backside pursuit. He is a very poor tackler and tends to shy away from the contact, both when making the tackle and in the open field when he is a blocking target. Overall, Watkins was a good, solid college player, but lacks the talent to start in the NFL which is why I would not draft him.
