STRENGTHS - Melvin brings a great combination of size and strength to DB spot. He is extremely physical and has the versatility to play both the safety an nickel position. He does a nice job in zone reacting to the routes and getting into proper position. He gets balanced quickly when lining up to make a tackle. Shows good route recognition which makes him faster.
WEAKNESSES - From an athletic standpoint, White is limited when needing to match up one on one. He struggles to flip his hips and turn and run down field. To often he is caught in chase mode. Playing against the run is a strength but he does need to keep his head up when making a tackle. Many times he will get caught lunging at the tackle and bounces off the ball carrier.
SUMMARY - Melvin White has been a top performer for this Ragin Cajun backfield the last few years an has given his team the versatility to match up with other teams skill players. He is best suited to play safety at the NFL level do to average overall skills but with his size an strength combination he can easily slide down into the nickel corner spot when need a proper match up to go against tight ends split out. Being able to play in a cover two style defense would be best because he is a much better zone player and can utilize his best skill set which are his instincts. Overall Melvin White would make a solid 6th/7th round pick and can be an impact player on special teams.
