KHALID WOOTEN CB, Nevada

STRENGTHS - Wooten has good height, length and bulk for the CB position and is a solid athlete. He possesses the straight line speed to run with most NFL receivers in space, and when using proper technique he can flip his hips efficiently and maintain proper spacing. He has the strength to jam and redirect his man in press coverage, and uses his length to his advantage from the trail position. He also displays very good ball skills, as he times his reach around well and reads his receiver's eyes to help him locate the ball in time to break up passes.

WEAKNESSES - Wooten has a lot of the physical tools needed to be an NFL starter, but from a technique standpoint he is very inconsistent. He tends to get upright and choppy in his pedal, which limits his ability to stay with his man in transition. In press coverage he generally gives a free release off the LOS, which causes him to lose contact with his man. While he has good straight-line speed, he lacks the explosiveness to consistently break and close from off and zone coverage in time to break up passes. He is aggressive in run support but tends to come up out of control, causing him to bounce off the runner or whiff completely with poor shoulder block attempts.

SUMMARY - Khalid Wooten certainly has the measurables to play at the next level, but he is far from a polished product. While he clearly possesses the speed and agility to cover in space, his tendency to get upright in transition often puts him in chase and recovery mode. He has the length and strength to be effective in press coverage but he isn't physical off the ball and allows too many free releases off the LOS. He is also an aggressive player against the run, but he struggles to break down in space and misses too many open field tackles he should be in position to finish. Wooten certainly won't be ready to play on day one, but a team that is willing to be patient with his development on defense and put him on special teams as a rookie could see an investment in him pay dividends down the road. He is worth a day three selection because of his size, athleticism and potential, and could be selected earlier than some may expect.
