The Chicago Bears shocked the football world today by pulling the trigger and acquiring disgruntled Pro-Bowl quarterback Jay Cutler and a fifth round pick from the Denver Broncos. In return, the Broncos landed quarterback Kyle Orton, the Bears’ first round draft picks in 2009 and 2010 and a third round pick in 2009.
The National Football Post wants to hear YOUR THOUGHTS! Who came out on the better end of this deal? Are the Bears now a favorite to win the NFC? Did the Broncos get as much as they could?
Fire Away.
The Broncos made out great on this trade... I mean I didn't think anyone would give up two first rounders and the bears did... Lomardi has to correct his comments. the Bears made a move!! .. The Broncos have to think that Chris Simms is the answer.. or try to leverage this years Number 1 and their new 3 for the chance to move up to get Sanchez ( who they love by the way). If the Jets would have pulled this trade.. I would have not approved of it.. But the Bears needed to do it...Packer fans are either rejoicing or really frightened...Bret Favre is not walking through that door Packer Fans.. Bart Starr ain't walking through that door lol
Better than him going to the Vikings, not quite as good as going to the Lions.
As long as the RIDICULOUS talk radio callers this afternoon didn't get their way - and trade Rodgers for him straight up?!???? - I'm fine with it.
I think the Broncos win here. They got quite a bit after getting into a bad situation. I do think the Bears improved their team but I'm not sure Cutler is the answer. He could be and he is definitely better than Orton. Give it 2 years before we know who the real winner is.
The Bears are not the favorite to win the NFC North. They still need a player maker at WR and improve their Defense. But they will definitely contend and they've closed the gap on Minnesota and Green Bay.
I think Cutler will be a good quarterback for years to come. As a Packers fan I have to say I think the Bears just improved their team, how much? Time will tell. On the flipside, giving up 2 first rounders is a big risk. With Cutler showing obvious character flaws I'm not sure if this will end up biting the Bears. Either way, good deal now Cutler can focus on winning something meaningful and the Bears can potentially start a reputation of solid qb play.
I will say it again, I am just so happy that the Broncos didn't end up with Brady Quinn. That was the nightmare worst-case scenario, all of which have been coming true with the Broncos, so I was genuinely concerned.
I have no doubt that most people will look askance at picking up Orton, but I kinda like the guy. He's got Moxie, and was starting to put something together last year. I like to compare him to another Purdue QB that struggled a little bit before turning it on big time. That's right, I'm saying it. Kyle Orton is the next Drew Brees.
I think the following...
1. Jay Cutler leads the league in turnovers in 2009 (no offense, JaMarcus).
2. The Bears have no offensive line, no receivers (current starter and former Cutler teammate Earl Bennett has zero career catches), and no first round picks until 2011.
3. If Denver chooses wisely, they'll look like the early 90s Dallas teams. If not, McDaniels will get the ridiculous "goat" title the old man media assigns.
4. Kyle Orton, with a good offensive line and receiving corps, might be good. Not sure I'm with Scot and his "next Drew Brees" prediction, but I think he can lead his team to some wins.
5. Everyone in keeper leagues with Jay Cutler who thought about Brady's 2007 season when McDaniels was hired wants to throw up all over himself right now.
Rarely does a QB of Cutler's ability become available. Full credit goes to the Bears for beating all the other teams to the punch to land him. He still has to cut down on his INTs though.
Nevertheless, the Bears are still not Super Bowl material. They need help on defense and their WRs will not make Cutler look better than he was in Denver. Now they may be the favorites to win the division, but they still are not as good as the Giants, and they just lost two key draft picks that could have helped get them better at other positions.
I think the real question in all of this is how does this affect Cutler's fantasy stock? He's gotta drop. Going from throwing to Marshal and Royal to Hester and ... who? Down year for the kid this year
If the Broncos are as smitten with Sanchez as everyone is saying, a trade with the Chiefs make a lot of sense. I think Pioli will be more than happy to move out of the #3 spot. That team has plenty of holes to fill and the #3 pick is prohibitively expensive. With Raji's positive test, maybe he could drop down to #12 and still get him to complement Dorsey. Now that they're stuck with Simms for the time being, I suspect the Broncos won't want to take a chance that the Seahawks take Sanchez either. I wonder what's going to happen to Orton in all this? I guess he'll return to his backup role in Chicago...
I think the Bears have too many holes on both sides of the ball to overpay the way they did.
I've been a Broncos fan my whole life. Honestly, I thought they would work this out...so I'm torn. I do think the Broncos made out like bandits with the two 1st rounders.
We'll see who emerges as the starter after camp, but my money is on Simms.
Guess I need to do something with my Cutler jerse.
I think if they get another QB in the draft, the Broncos willcut Orton. What I don't get is that fact the bears have a lot of issues on defense and at WR. That number 1 this year could represent a LB for the defense or a WR they desperately need. Granted that Orton was going to be winning you any championships, but do you really think Cutler will with what they curently have. I am starting to think that this was a panick move since they have done nothing all offseason. If you were going to make the decision that you needed a QB, why not trade a 2nd rounder and Orton to NE...?? Cutler will be great but the Bears front office has a lot of wholes that they have to fill before they can even compete for a playoff spot let alone win the division. Don't the Bears see how the Giants accumilate assets through the draft? Do you wonder why NY and NE have the most picks in the first three rounds? Wouldn't you think as the Bears GM you would think " Wait a second, lets build through the draft". Thats why I have no problem with the approach the Packers are taking. Sure they didn't sign anyone who might make an immediate impact, but they realized lets evaluate the draft and pick by need and talent grade. It really frustrates me to see panic trades when this could have been done March1 fo 10 percent of the cost. What if the Bears go 6-10? Thats a top ten pick..
Firesalt;
I see it the other way. Rarely does a QB of Kyle Ortons' ability become available that can be acquired with two first round draft picks to boot!
Big Whiny baby. Sucks.
Wont do ANYTHING.
Irregardless of anything Cutler does after this trade, Chicago is on the losing end of this and Denver is definitely on the winning end. Giving up that many picks is one thing if Detroit or some other team that has extra first rounders to use but to give up three good picks that are the only ones you have? Especially when you have as many holes to fill as Chicago?
On the flip side, the Denver management now only looks about half as stupid as they did last week. Never should've happened in the first place but they got great value for their man. The combination of Orton and Simms gives them temporary options while grooming a rookie TBD. Not bad at all.
Oh, and Joe - I wouldn't be surprised to see the Bears finish last in the NFC North this year. Sure, they could use a better QB but Orton isn't the reason the weren't winning last year.
The immediate win goes to Denver, especially if they can get Sanchez or hold out until next year and grab one of the better prospects with Chicago's pick. The Bears mortgaged the next 5 years to get Cutler, and if he pulls through, the Bears win, too.
My only thought is who is Cutler going to throw to? He had a ton of picks throwing to Marshall/Royal/Scheffler. Now, he's throwing to Hester/Olson. Big downgrade.
No way the Broncos should be doing anything else as far as drafting a qb this year (at least at the top of the draft). If neither Orton nor Simms works out, they are in a position for a top ten pick next year, which puts them in position in the Tebow/Bradford/McCoy sweepstakes.
Big price for a big return. Bears also signed Orlando Pace to be the left tackle. The o-line is no longer an issue and will actually be improved over last year when they were decent. Agreed that they need more receivers but something a lot of people overlook is Earl Bennett played with Cutler at Vanderbilt and was very productive and will quickly have chemistry. Cutler automatically makes him a better receiver and can actually get the deep ball to Hester. Bears still have a decent amount of picks to address gaps and can pick up receivers after the draft even if they have to go a little older for a year with Holt or Marvin Harrison.
Not sure who wins w/r/t Bears v. Broncos (I'll give the Broncos the edge), but I know who is the biggest loser: Jay Crybaby.
He goes from an offensive minded team and coach with great offensive talent to ...the Bears. His numbers will drop, he'll throw more picks and less TDs, and do so in a city with little patience. The management there might be on the way out too, unless Cutler bails them out in 2009. I hope Bus gets Cutler his extension NOW, although I can't see the Bears going that route. Just another example of "careful what you wish for...it just be come to pass."
Sometimes I wonder if people think about the comments they write. How do you overpay for a starting QB for the next 10 years???? Why would Denver include Orton in a trade only to cut them if they draft a QB? I get the sense that Denver may not draft Sanchez and look for a QB in later rounds or wait for next year's crop. Last five 18th picks, Flacco, Leon Hall, Bobby Carpenter, Erasmus James, Will Smith, not necessarily great production from this spot. To me it comes down to Denver traded Jay Cutler for 2 1st Round Picks and a 3rd and traded a 5th round pick for Orton. Overall, I would say it's the best the Broncos could get since they were insistent on trading Cutler.
Wish Jay all the best in Chicago. Orton is definitely a drop-off for Denver but maybe McD can pull a Matt Cassel with him.
No, there won't be a quarterback controversy in Denver. Simms was Tenneesee's THIRD-STRINGER last year. Prior to that Tampa couldn't get anyone to trade for him, and when he was cut no one picked him up from waivers. The guy is a dud. Check his abysmal stats.
Great move by the Bears. In the decade ending in 2009, the Bears spent two first round picks trying to find a great QB. Neither Grossman or McNown panned out. In the decade beginning in 2009, the Bears have spent 2 first round picks on the QB position, but they have a young pro-bowl QB to show for it.
This is a great situation for the Broncos too. With extra draft picks and a reduction in expectations due to a downgrade at QB, the team is in position to build for the future without regard for the present.
Bears got hoodwinked. Way overpaid for a sub 500 emotionally unstable man who plays the most important position on the field. Denver will be better this year and the immediate and long term future. Great move. Guess their GM has a lot on the ball.
I think both teams made out in the long run, but the Broncos probably just cemented their record to no better than 3-13 and probably won't have a winning season for 3-5 years. Offense in shambles, Defense in shambles, Front Office in shambles, and fans divided for years. McDummy will be run out of Denver before they'll ever be a solid franchise again.
The Bears just became a contender for the next 10 years IF they can put enough talent on the Field in the short term to go with Cutler. One of the biggest moves every in Chicago sports history and I would bet that it pays big dividends.
People will be comparing this to the Hershell Walker trade, but this one is likely to turn out better for the team getting the star player.
And as a bonus, if the Bears struggle this year, Shanahan would be a great option as their next coach... stay tuned, football just got a whole lot more interesting in Chicago.
The Bears have assured themselves of parity with the Lions for at least the next two years. A slightly better than average quarterback, an excellent running back, adequate tight ends, no wide receivers and a questionable offensive line. Add to this an aging and weak defense and you've got a team fighting for third place in the NFC North. Two first rounders? Crazy!
McDaniels comes out looking like a card shark.
Cutler is in danger of becoming the next Rex Grossman.
Chicago front office looks desperate and flighty. But if Jay is as solid as they think, they'll find a way to build around him.
Picking up Orlando Pace today certainly shows they're serious.
I like the deal for Denver but I think they should of entertained offers right up until the weekend of the draft. Drive that price up even more. The action was there for Cutler and it wouldn't go away, only increase imo. It would be sweet if Raji now fell to #12 and the Bronco's grabbed him and another d-lineman or linebacker.
For the Bears, i really like that they finally made an agressive move. Everyone was where's the Bears in free agency, who's going to challenge Kyle Orton for the starting job. Well I guess Chicago was keeping their playing hand real close to their chests as they had a game plan and executed it well.
There are positives and negatives to this deal too, only time will tell.
How long until September!!!!
Broncos came out big in this one.
Cutler will discover what life is like without top receivers, a quality YOUNG Offensive Line. The poor kid will be running for his life.
Another point is his attitude and health. Will the pounding hurt not only his emotional stability but also hurt his diabetes. If he is hit too many times, will it shorten his career?
Will he go to the media everytime he loses and blame the coaches like in Denver? Imagine what is going to occur when he starts one of his "Feuds" like he did with Rivers in SD, or the Jets Defense? Will he lead the wolves in demanding that Lovie be fired and Shanahan be hired? And what about Bert?
These and many other questions will be answered in the next episode of "Soap", Cutler style.
I always liked Kyle Orton. I agree with the statements that he is not the reason the Bears lost games last year. He is a big guy with a strong arm who makes good decisions and has had absolutely no one to throw to for the last couple of years playing behind a shaky offensive line. Look at his career record as a starter.
Couldn't they have traded for TWO decent receivers with those high of picks. Along with the signing of Orlando Pace wouldn't that make them a lot better.
I always liked Kyle Orton. I big strong guy with a good arm who made good decisions but had no one to throw to playing behind a shaky offensive line. Despite that he had a nice winning percentage as a starter.
Couldn't the Bears have traded for TWO decent receivers with those high draft picks? I don't care how good Cutler is, that would have been a better idea.
I think that's a GREAT deal for DENVER. Chicago paid way too much. Of course.... Cutler will do well.... except in the COLD when the BALL is harder and heavier. Yes, I know Denver was cold, too, but Cutler had high-altitude on his side there where the ball would travel farther. And he'll NEED to throw a bunch of long balls for TDs since Chicago has such a crappy secondary that allows opponents to score left and right. And now... they won't be landing any first-round caliber DBs for the next couple of years.
Stupid, stupid, stupid. Kyle Orton is NOT that BAD.
My thoughts:
1. This will spell the end of Lovie Smith in 2 years
2. Cutler's TD:INT next year: 24:17. Not good.
3. Bears' wins next year: 7
4. Broncos' wins next year: 9 (and 10 and a playoff berth the following season)
5. Cutler's half-life till his teammates can't stand him: 25 games
6. Number of Super Bowls Cutler will win, regardless of team: ZERO
GREAT PICK UP.....ALOT TO GIVE UP BUT GREAT PICK UP....ALL THE SO CALLED EXPERTS SAY THE BEARS ARE NEVER GOING TO BE A GOOD TEAM UNTIL THEY GET A BIG TIME QB NOW THEY GET ONE THAT IS 25 LET ME SAY THAT AGAIN HE IS 25 AND A PRETTY GOOD JUDGE OF QB TALENT (SHANAHAN) THOUGHT HE WAS PRETTY GOOD. ROCKET ARM MAKES EVERY THROW THROWS A GREAT DEEP BALL (ORTON WAS HORRIBLE JUST ASK HESTER. HE WONT THROW AS MANY INT BECAUSE HE HAS A GOOD RB TO DUMP THE BALL OFF TO UNLIKE DENVER. NOW TO ALL OF THE PEOPLE WHO SAY THE BEARS HAVE NO ONE FOR HIM TO THROW THE BALL TOO.....PLEASE MINUS CALVIN JOHNSON NAME ME ON 1ST ROUND WR THAT HAVE MADE A DIFFERENCE LATELY DONT FOR GET THIS IS A VERY WR DRAFT THEY STILL HAVE A 2ND ROUNDER AND THEY COULD EASILY GIVE UP THAT 3RD ROUNDER BECAUSE JUST A FEW PICKS LATER THEY HAVE A COMPENSITORY PICK IN THE 3RD ROUND. LET SEE THE BEARS KNOW HOW TO PICK GREAT TALENT IN LATER ROUNDS BRIGGS (4TH) VASHER(4TH) ANDERSON(5TH)ROOKIE RUNNER UP!!!.... SO IN ANGELO AS A BEARS FAN I TRUST AND ALL OTHER BEARS FANS NEED TO ALSO!!!!!!!!!!
BEARS SUPERBOWL
Gutsy move by the Bears. I mean, of course the Broncos were going to do this. They had to get rid of Cutler. But the Bears had Orton, who showed some real promise last year, I thought. (like somebody else said, he was not the reason they lost games last year) But now? They gave up what they had - and what they might've gotten in the 1st round for two years. And for what? Did they just get Sonny Jurgensen or Jeff George? It could still go either way with him. We'll certainly see.
One thing's for sure: The NFC North just got a whole lot more interesting.
BEARS CANT DRAFT FIRST ROUND PICKS DUMBASS I LIVE IN CHI . WHO WAS OUR FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICKS IN THE PAST YEARS .....YEA I KNOW
NOT ON OUR TEAM
Hard to call either team a winner in this deal. The Broncos get substantially worse at the most important position in sports after selling their team as one poised to win now to incoming free agents. Take a look at their schedule and if the rest of the league is remotely similar to what they were last year, Denver gets destroyed on a routine basis with an embarrassing defense and special teams and an offense with talent but no running game and no one to distribute the ball. Cassell had 5 years to learn the Pats offense, no QB in Denver has that luxury.
The Bears gave up the farm to get a star at the same "most important position in professional sports" but in doing so failed to recognize they have no playmakers on the outside and an aging defense that desperately need those picks to improve. However, Greg Olsen will be a nice fit with Cutler a la Tony Scheffler and Forte will allow Cutler to throw substantially fewer passes in better down and distance situations which will help cut down on those INT numbers in a big way.
Overall, I'd say you're looking at two mediocre to pretty bad teams next year with potential for competitiveness a little more visible in Chicago than Denver. And there's only a discussion here if Denver nails each of those draft picks because a solid starting QB is exponentially more important than anything else. Who wins? Chicago but it's close.
One word, overpaid.
My thoughts:
1) CHi wins. Between Olson, Forte, Hester, bennett Cutler has enough offense to be successful. And it takes pressure off thier DEF. They did win 9 games with orton and his noodle arm.
2) Good move overall for Cutler. Asst's under Belichek make horrid HC's. McD probably won't be different.
3) DEN just set itself back 3 years. They have limited DEF, thier offense is questionable and they gave away the guy who got something out of a so/so offense.
4) Simms will be the starting QB. Orton was never more than a cheap throw in for the deal to be a back-up.
5) Rodgers vs Cutler is gonna be great fun to watch....
I initially thought the Bears overpaid, but thinking about it more this is a pretty even trade. Denver really got as much as they could hope to get for Cutler. And Chicago's offense becomes so much better. Chicago of course has no receivers, but even if they used a high draft pick on one you cannot expect him to be an Eddie Royal and contribute in a big way immediately. Cutler will definitely see a drop off in fantasy stats, but will also see a drop off in turnovers. The Bears will be a running and play action team, and defenses will have to respect the pass.
Those of you citing negative statistics regarding Cutler need to consider the circumstances. He's a young QB playing with a lot of expectations. While he had talented WRs to work with, he lacked a steady veteran presence. He has had an awful defense who never protected leads (which is why he had to take more chances and throw more INTs) and, probably most importantly no running game to speak of. While I do not think Cutler is a pro bowler this season, I think the Bears have a winning record and contend for the division crown. The Lions are, well the Lions. The Vikings do not have a quarterback (Sage Rosenfels will average more than two turnovers a game, not including games played against Detroit), and the Packers are picking high for a reason.
That said, Lovie is out in two seasons after a talented roster goes to waste (either narrowly missing the playoffs or losing in the first round for two years), but by then the Bears will have attracted some quality free agents and have more draft picks to work with. As a Lions fan, I hate that this trade happened.
Also, look at Orton's perceived value in the trade. The Broncos were asking for two 1s and a 2. They got two 1s, but instead of a 2 they got Orton and a 3 and gave up a 5. That basically values Orton as, what, a third round pick? Do you spend a third round pick on your future franchise QB? Orton is a throw in. Denver drafts a QB in the first round this year or next year.
Denver is going to ship their #12 and #18 to St. Louis or Kansas City for Sanchez. Orton is in the final year of his contract so Denver can play him while Sanchez sits on the bench for a season to learn. If Orton plays well they can sign and trade him just like Cassell next season and Sanchez then gets to run the show.
Cutler's vertical ability should fit in with Ron Turner much better.
Orton could manage things well but Grossman could not. Grossman could do vertical passing but failed to manage things.
Cutler can do both and the offense should be able to use its entire playbook and have more options at hand all around.
If Cutler gets hurt, the Broncos will be drafting very high next season.
Jake Plummer threw for over 4000 yards and 25 TDs with Shanahan. Does that mean he's a top 10 QB in the NFL as well?
The Bears overpaid because they had to. Jerry Angelo has conducted one horrible offensive draft after another and now his vaunted defense has more mileage on it than a Lincoln Tunnel whore. He would have wasted this year's #1 on Percy Harvin or someone else as stupid so why not trade it.
Denver is in rebuilding mode, McDaniels and Co are blowing the whole thing up, with that horrible defense they weren't going to win many games anyway, so they'll use Orton as a caretaker QB to bide them time while they develop Sanchez or someone else of that ilk.
A trade that helps both teams, Chicago right away, and Denver down the road.

Wow. Tough call. Bear's gave up quite a bit for Cutler, but Cutler is the ideal QB to play in the Windy City. As a Lions fan, I hate to see him come to the Black and Blue Division, and I'm glad we didn't give up that much for him. By the way, QB controversy in Denver, Simms and Orton?
