Carson Palmer     Cincinnati     Ht:  6’5’     Wt:  230     Age:  29     Bye:  8

Why We Like Him:  Palmer’s willingness to throw the ball down the field (with the rocket he has in place of a right arm) has been one of the reasons he has thrown for over 3,800 yards and 26 TD’s in each of the last three seasons.  His Offensive Line was terrible in pass protection for him in 2007 and he STILL threw for over 4,000 yards and 26 scores.  He plays four games against two teams that require an aerial attack in order to win:  Baltimore and Pittsburgh.  When his receivers are on point, they make up one of the most lethal WR tandems in the NFL.  Another key point, Palmer has never missed a start due to injury in his NFL Career.

Why We Don’t Like Him:  The Bengals have a suspect running game which allows opposing defenses to focus on playing the pass.  Chris Henry is back as the #3 WR and is suspended for the first four games, so if anything goes south with Houshmandzadeh or Johnson, Palmer could struggle to find an open target.  His O-Line better step it up from last year or C.P. could find himself throwing 20 INT’s again like he did in 2007.

Fantasy Outlook:  The Bengals won’t be the Bengals of old if they don’t get a legitimate running back to take the pressure off of Palmer.  With no third wide out for the first four games to stretch the field it may become increasingly difficult to find Johnson and Houshmandzadeh open.  Add the NFC East as the out of conference opponent, and 2008 could quickly turn into 2007 for Palmer.  On the flip side, a happy Johnson and some decent pass protection could put Palmer back in the top 5 for 2008, given that his off years have still produced big numbers.

It sounds like you are not high on Chris Perry?

He has to prove he can stay healthy and carry a full workload.
