From Jason Wilde of the Wisconsin State Journal:

GREEN BAY — Charles Woodson used no qualifiers, never couched his response as a hypothetical or wondered whether the story was true.

Instead, when told after the Green Bay Packers' 34-14 victory over Indianapolis that former Packers quarterback Brett Favre reportedly called the Detroit Lions before Green Bay's Sept. 14 game at Ford Field to give the Lions coaches insight into the Packers offense, Woodson didn't hold back.

"I don't respect that. If they call him and he gives them information, that's one thing. But to seek a team out and to feel like you're trying to sabotage this team, I don't respect that," the Packers veteran cornerback said. "I know he's been the greatest player around here for a long time, but there's no honor in that.

"I've never called a coach on another team and told them what's going to happen. Obviously he says he wasn't bitter about what happened, but obviously there is a little bit of resentment there."

Asked about the story after the game, Packers coach Mike McCarthy replied, "I would say it's disappointing." He then cut himself off before commenting further.

Fox Sports' Jay Glazer broke the story during the network's pregame show Sunday morning. According to Glazer's sources, Favre — now the New York Jets' quarterback after his Aug. 6 trade from the Packers — spent 60 to 90 minutes on the phone with the Lions' coaches prior to their Week 2 game and "gave them a rundown of the nuances of what Green Bay does on offense."

Two league sources said Sunday they had been told of Favre contacting the Lions last month, before Glazer's report. One said the report was "absolutely" true.

Sports Illustrated's Peter King said on NBC's pre-game show Sunday evening that Favre text-messaged him Sunday afternoon before the Jets' 16-13 overtime loss at Oakland and said the story was "total B.S." Favre was not asked about the report during his press conference following the Jets' loss.

Glazer's sources said Favre was put in touch with the coaches by then-team president Matt Millen.

Favre admitted during the NFL's tampering investigation into the Minnesota Vikings that in addition to talking to Vikings coach Brad Childress and offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell while contemplating unretiring, he also spoke to Millen. One coach on the Lions' staff, Kippy Brown, coached with the Packers in 2000 as running backs coach under Mike Sherman.

Glazer's sources said at least one other team had "casual talks" in the past with Favre and talked about some of what Green Bay does, "but it was nowhere near the details he let loose to the Lions."

Asked about the story after the Lions' loss at Houston, Detroit defensive coordinator Joe Barry said: "If he helped us, he didn't do a very good job." The Packers beat the Lions 48-25.

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers declined comment after the game about the story, while defensive end Aaron Kampman said, "I'm not going to touch that with a 10-foot pole."

If this is true, it's effing hilarious! Even if it's not true, the Brett Favre story is already strange enough -- retiring; drama queen press conferences; tampering charges; being picky about where he gets traded; being offered money to stay retired; ending up with the Jets -- now he's sabotaging the Packers season from afar!?

Of course, for truly effective sabotage, he's always had a knack for those game-killing INTs.

Jay Glazer said he is 1000% behind it. If league sources confirm it, that's just doing it for me. Cannot really respect the guy anymore. He is like a 12-year old and somebody took his ball away from him. As class-less as they come. GB with Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy made the right call. They shipped him out of town. Obviously for him it was never the team, it was a Brett Brett Brett. Good luck Jets with this class-less individual. As Woodson said, it is one thing to be asked about it, it is another to seek actively to stick to your old team as much as you can. My Packers should not retire his jersey. Just send it to him down there. He never was a Packer in my opinion now.

It is the simple fact that Jason Wilde is Ted Thompsons little girl friend who has and will continue to put out false reports like a team owned cell phone that never existed or tampering charges that never had any credibility. This bias reporter and newspaper should move on already and focus on the horrible decisions made by Ted "I have Sizzle" Thompson instead of trying to come up with new Brett Farve gossip. I thought everyone was happy with Rogers and that Brett was moved out to get rid of distractions and drama? Then why not let the Hall of Famer be? Maybe because the ego of Ted still sizzles through idiots like Jason Wilde who want to try and destroy a Hall of Fame reputation. Give it a rest already, you have no concrete proof of anything you claim, and you're still Thompson's little girl......

Rob,

What is you're beef with Jason Wilde? It was Jay Glazer's report. Jason was only making Wisconsin people aware of the report, it wasn't his doing.

Oh, and nice little rant, that's good stuff :(

Echoing Peter's comments above, I think we are seeing the "real" Brett Favre persona - a self-centered, whiny brat who believes he is above reproach - now that he is out of the protective bubble of Green Bay, where he was worshipped like a demigod.

Wasn't it Jason who also road the coat tails of Jay Glazer's story about the cell phone and the Vikings? I think so...and now here we go again. Keep up the great work of digging deep into the truth and not just unnamed sources. That's great Journalism.......

I agree Peter. Don't retire Brett's Jersey. Don't display any Memorabelia including the Super Bowl trophy....Don't sell any more of his gear....Don't achnowledge him at all....Let him go into the Hall as a Jet...J-E-T-S...JETS JETS JETS....With only one losing season in his career I am sure Green Bay will be happy to wipe the books clean and go back to the Lynn Dickey-Don Makowski days...Have fun and enjoy mediocrity!!!!!

Well Rob - "Have fun and enjoy mediocrity", exactly what Favre is doing now :) Jay Glazer is accurate most of the time, the Lions don't deny the report, that one even if not entirely true at least has a true core, I am convinced of that. And as Charles Woodson said, being contacted is one thing, actively trying to stick it to the Packers just shows #4 needs a shrink. Glad to see all his INTs in a Jets jersey now.

Favre has gone cell phone happy. Quit textin', quit calling, just throw the damn thing in the Hudson River already.

I guess we can't just jump onto the "guilty" bandwagon just yet, but it doesn't surprise me in the least -- as long as the Packers play good football, he will lose some of his god-like status in Green Bay. By helping the Packers lose, Brett comes out as the "winner" in this summer's drama, because everyone will say "they should have kept him."

If Brett really did this, it was stupid, short-sighted, and ethically questionable. I'd like to see the league investigate this allegation and see if a) it happened; b) the extent of the information he shared; and c) if he's been calling other teams

FACTS CURRENTLY KNOWN TO PUBLIC RE: FAVRE/LIONS STORY:

1. Jay Glazer reported: "Several sources have told FOX Sports that Favre earlier this year phoned the Detroit Lions prior to their battle versus Favre's old team, the Green Bay Packers, and gave them a rundown of the nuances of what Green Bay does on offense."

2. Favre sent a text message to Peter King indicating the story was total BS.

3. Peter King reported that "I also spoke to the Lions COO [presumably Tom Lewand] and he said, 'Our coaches are perplexed. There was no coaching of our coaching staff by Brett Favre.' "

--Some have argued that this is not a denial by the Lions.

--Other than the above comment reported by King, other Lions coaches have responded to questions with a "no comment." Some have argued that this is tantamount to confirming the Glazer story.

People may draw their own conclusions, and I will draw mine.

The Ted Thompson droolers who assert that the Glazer story is an unassailable fact at this point, and who rely on it to criticize Favre, are as wrong as they were about the Vikings tampering story.

There is no attribution in the Glazer story to a named source. The story must have come from someone who contacted Glazer and wanted him to report it. The question is, why was Glazer contacted and by whom?

My take: this was a machiavellian move by the insecure, paranoid Ted Thompson; an exaggeration designed to undermine Favre and to ride out the storm of criticism gathering around him.
