FROM MICHAEL LOMBARDI:

13 March 2009

QUOTE:   “Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in that grey twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat.”  ~ Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., Speech at the Hamilton Club, Chicago

FROM JENNY VERENTAS OF THE NEWARK STAR-LEDGER...  Update: An NFL executive familiar with the Giants'  thinking told our Paul Needell he doesn't expect them to pursue (Anquan) Boldin if he is indeed put on the trading block.  Needell is hearing that the Giants and Eagles are among the interested teams. Both teams could use Boldin's powerful style and 1,038 receiving yards from the 2008 season -- the Giants, as they await Plaxico Burress' future, and the Eagles, who always seem to be wideout-needy. Both teams also have three picks each in the first two rounds of the upcoming draft. After the Super Bowl, it was reported Boldin wanted out of Arizona, but he later appeared open to a new deal with the team.  He is expected to want a yearly salary closer to the $10 million per season teammate Larry Fitzgerald earns.

It appears to me, based on the work the Giants have done this offseason, they are going to use their draft choices to improve their skill positions on offense.  The Giants have focused on defense in the free-agent market, but with the draft looming, it appears they have the ability take the best players available on offense.  Here is a breakdown of key NFC East questions.

             DALLAS

1.    Who is going to make plays on the ball in the secondary?  The Cowboys were one of the worse teams in the NFL in interceptions.  They must improve their secondary play.

2.    Where is the depth in the offensive line going to come from? Every starter is over 30 years old.

3.    Will the Cowboys be able to repair their run defense with the addition of Keith Brooking?  They allowed too many big plays in the run game, and some of this was a result of some of the worse safety tackling in the NFL.

4.    Who will be the main return man for the ‘Boys?  Pacman Jones averaged a “whopping” 4.5 yards per punt return. They need to improve their vertical field position.

5.    Will they have enough depth at wide receiver?  Miles Austin and Patrick Crayton take a larger role in the offense. Who will fill their roles?

            NY GIANTS

1.    Who will assume the No. 1 wide receiver role if Plaxico Burress doesn’t make it back to the field?  Domenik Hixon is much better as the third receiver, not as the one.  The Giants were 28th in the NFL in dropped passes.

2.    Where is the depth in the offensive line?  The Giants have been fortunate to keep their line together and avoid injuries.  This is the year to add depth to that area.

3.    Do the Giants have enough corners?  In the NFL, corners are hard to find and harder to keep because of the cost of re-signing them.  The Giants can add depth by finding the right corners.

4.    How do they improve the kicking game? The Giants ranked 31st in the NFL in allowing returns on kicks, an indication they need additional speed in depth positions.

            PHILADELPHIA

1.    Who will be the offensive tackles for the Birds next season?  Will Shawn Andrews be able to contribute to the team?

2.    Who will provide depth on the offensive line?  Is it Max Jean-Gilles?  Winston Justice?  Not sure that will work.

3.    Will the Eagles ever get a blocking tight end?  For some reason, they are anti-blocker at the position.  Why not get someone who can at least hold the point of attack?  They ranked 32nd in the NFL in converting third-and-one and fourth-and-one.  And 32nd in red-zone offense inside the five-yard line.  Might want to think about a blocker.

4.    Who will complement Brian Westbrook?  The Birds are also anti-big back.  However, all the numbers show them deficient in short yardage areas.

5.    Is it time to think about a young kicker?  They were 22nd in field-goal percentage.

            WASHINGTON

1.    Can they win and be productive with the same older offensive line?  Pete Kendall played better in ‘08 than new signee Derrick Dockery.

2.    Who is going to be the kicker?  The Redskins were the worst team in the NFL in field-goal percentage.

3.    How can they make explosive plays and big plays?  They ranked 30th in points scored the last 10 weeks of the season.  Do they have enough skill players?

4.    Who is going to make Ray Gustini happy and play left end?  Losing Demetric Evans to the 49ers almost killed Rapid Ray.  Where is the depth on the defensive line?

5.    Can quarterback Jason Campbell be the player they hoped?  Can he solve all the problems?

re: Eagles
I'm not sure that the Eagles problems on third and fourth and short are philosophical (what's their performance over the last few years). I think they have become too predictable, and Westbrook had a subpar year. Going big is the easy fix. I think they need a playmaker who will tilt the defense's hand, so they can keep the opposition honest. That doesn't mean signing a big TE, per se.

Is Ray Gustini a Redskins fan? I didn't get the reference.

As far as DE, I really think the Redskins have a hidden gem on their roster in Chris Wilson. I hope he'll get an opportunity this season.

Pete Kendall played well, but the line is currently experiencing a youth movement. Jansen will surely lose his position, either to Stephon Heyer, or a rookie from the draft.

As far as the big plays...that depends on Jason Campbell and the 2 young WRs, Devin Thomas and Malcom Kelly. Campbell is in his contract year, so that may help. And the two WRs will enter their 2nd season.

Who knows though? It's not easy being a Redskins fan!

Do you not think that the QB position is a big question for the Giants? Eli seemed to regress horribly down the stretch last year. Without a stud WR, he is unable to make anything happen if its not play action, and his accuracy is just plain ugly sometimes.

Dallas
6. Will they win more than 4 games?

(Probably not, in my opinion)

Also, in answer to "who will complement Brian Westbrook?" I reckon Boldin would do the trick. Give the Eagles offense a serious downfield threat and that should take at least a few pairs of eyes away from B-West.

All excellent points in regarding the Cowboys situation. The back up offensive linemen on this team looked to be making progress under Sparano when you watched them play in the pre season. I cant say that is the case now. The Punt Return part of the game has truly been a problem the last two years. I do believe that they will address that in the draft. I would like to see them add a young receiver to the mix. The more I watch Stanback play, the more I question their plan for him.

If the Eagles trade for Boldin they should try and trade for Jason Peters from Buffalo. I know Andy loves to draft lineman but this would solidy the tackle positions and allow them to keep Shawn Andrews at Guard. And really, they would still need to improve the depth of the line and have good backups for both the Andrews brothers so Andy can still use those picks on O-Line. Is Jason Peters worth it? How good is he?

I knew that all NFC East teams were flawed from watching the division extensively last season but the problems are more egregious than I realized. It is in the Iggles' and Skins' best interests to get younger kickers. Meanwhile, Dallas' problems primarily lie with management as Jerry Jones already makes too many spectacles which detract from the product on the field. The Giants do need to draft exceptional talent at receiver if possible because I don't think Plax is coming back.

After the Rutgers size WR gets off the board in this draft it's a pretty sharp decline at the position.

The Giants might look that way if he's on the boards but my expectation was for them to go OL early since the draft is deep there.

Have maybe one big WR targeted aside from that and Britt is the one in mind?

This draft is good for speed backs and speedy wr, bad for big wr and fast cb.

The Giants need more backfield depth as well, and it is doubtful they'll be anywhere near a first round corner(Smith from Utah goes earlier than people claim).

There probably isn't a second round corner on the boards(IMO the Buckeyes CB would be there or round three in an average or deep year for speed there). Into round three or four maybe some favorites emerge.

You can wait to get wr speed, no waiting to add size at the position. You can add backfield speed(Purdue or Boise St halfbacks into day two).

Would the league allow Georgia's halfback Moreno to fall that far for the Giants to grab him in round one?

Unless one of the skill players with exceptional attributes falls their way(they could even move one back and still the best size WR) they should be in the same mindset as others and add OL to increase competition.

It would be tempting to get Johnson from Ga Tech or Ayers if he's there(second name should already be gone also).

You'd have certain names for those positions should they fall, and a lot of other names ready where you pick from. Center could take more priority there for depth concerns, if you plan on having the other starters intact.

If you get the OL set these guys can play for up to a decade. The way cap pricing is going, skill players will move more or cost more to keep, line ability becomes more a value.

It's a copycat league as well and others are beginning to follow suit.
