From Edgar Thompson of
The Palm Beach Post:
Tony Sparano said wide receiver Greg Camarillo goes out and performs every day like it could be his last one with the Miami Dolphins.
“He goes a million miles an hour,” Sparano said. “He practices every day like he’s one step away from losing his job, which gives him a little bit of an edge.”
Camarillo isn’t going anywhere.
Today, the team signed him to a 3-year deal worth around $6 million, an NFL source said. The deal will keep Camarillo, 26, in a Dolphins’ uniform through the 2011 season.
Camarillo, a three-year veteran who leads the team with 49 catches for 538 yards, would have been a free agent at season’s end. But the Dolphins proved once again they didn’t want to lose one of their most-reliable players.
Last month, the team signed back-up running back and special teams ace Patrick Cobbs to a two-year deal worth a little less than $2 million.
“The two most consistent players since the day I walked through the door have been Greg Camarillo and Patrick Cobbs,” Sparano said.
Camarillo and Cobbs, who both were undrafted out of college, also have become a couple of fan favorites.
Neither possesses the obvious physical traits of top NFL players.
But Camarillo (6-1, 190) has made up for his shortcomings with hard work and soft hands.
Camarillo, who earns a base salary of $445,000, entered training camp eight NFL catches, including a 64-yard game-winner during the team’s only victory last season, 22-16 against the Ravens.
The game turned Camarillo into a folk hero. But he’s proved all season he isn’t a one-hit wonder.
Now, Camarillo is a millionaire with a long-term future in South Florida.
