Every Friday here at The National Football Post, I give you a different perspective on the week’s top stories. Hard to believe it’s already Week 17 of the NFL season, but not to worry -- there is still plenty of drama and nonsense left. Today: Mike McCarthy blames a kicker, Roy Williams is frustrated in Big D, Brady Quinn gets beat up and more.
WEEK 17
EIGHT: Blame Game- Packers Coach Mike McCarthy blamed his kicker, Mason Crosby, for the blocked field goal that sent the Pack to overtime and an eventual loss in Chicago. Funny, I don’t think Crosby has had anything to do with the fourth quarter meltdowns in Green Bay this season. That sounds like coaching to me — but what do I know? I’m just an arrogant writer.
SEVEN: Favre Waivers (Again) - Brett Favre is hinting at retirement — again. Please, Brett, don’t do it. I know it must be hard to have to answer that question every day with the NYC media, but I’ve seen this before. It’s like TBS’s “24-Hours of A Christmas Story.” You know Ralphie is going to shoot himself with that BB gun, but you still laugh after watching it for the fourth time in a row. This is old news, my friends.
SIX: Roy Boy- Couldn’t wait to get out of Detroit, huh, Roy? Well, things aren’t exactly great in Dallas either. Nine games, 17 receptions. Instead of being the go-to guy in Detroit, Williams now runs routes for nothing — except that big check he gets every week. Roy is even receiving endorsements from T.O. this holiday season. And you thought The Grinch couldn’t lend a caring hand at Christmas.
FIVE: Browns Pack A Punch- The rumors out of Cleveland this week claim that Browns defensive tackle Shaun Smith punched quarterback Brady Quinn in the face. In the face? What is this, elementary school recess? I guess when things go bad in Cleveland, they really go bad. Do you think it had anything to do with that TV commercial of Quinn plowing through blocking dummies and drinking workout shakes? I’m sick of those, too.
FOUR: More Plax- I guess suspended Giants receiver Plaxico Burress doesn’t have car insurance, because he is now being sued for an accident that took place last March. Come on, guy, you can’t make it through the day without at least seeing four or five of those stupid Geico commercials. I even heard you can do it online nowadays.
THREE: Rams’ Plan- According to reports out of St. Louis, the Rams are going to freeze ticket prices for next season. Executive Vice-President Bob Wallace told the St. Louis Post Dispatch, “It’s clear the economy is going through a rough stretch right now.” The economy? How about the product on the field, buddy? You think the economy is bad, head to down to the Edward Jones Dome once in a while and see the real pitfall of St. Louis.
TWO: Bills’ Offer- The Buffalo Bills are offering an hourly wage to anyone in the area who can help shovel snow out of Ralph Wilson Stadium for Sunday’s match-up with the Patriots. They should also offer an hourly wage to anyone who can protect quarterback Trent Edwards for four quarters on Sunday, as well.
Holiday Leftovers- In all seriousness, I hope your day yesterday was filled with family and good times. With the last Sunday of the regular season approaching, grab a turkey sandwich and a cold beer and enjoy some NFL football, T.O. and the Lions with the ones you love. Have a great holiday weekend and avoid the mall.
Matt, as a long time Packers fan, let me address your points one by one.
1. McCarthy "blamed" Crosby for missing the FG that sent GB into overtime. Or was it he blamed him for not singing "White Christmas" in the right key. All I ask for, sir, is proof of your allegation. I read the coverage of the game intensely, and saw no "blame" from the coaches- just from the players who pointed the fingers at themselves.
2. Of course Favre "waivered" again. The only time he made a definitive statement was to retire- until he came back. Big deal. This has been going on for years. In GB, this was the annual annoyance you knew you'd have to face to get Brett back.
3. I'm not exactly a Dallas fan, but not really a hater (I let Jerry Jones handle the team moves- that alone has guaranteed over ten years of mediocrity).
However, I find it hilarious that TO should be saying that Roy Williams is being mis-used. Is he actually suggesting that less throws be directed his (TO's) way so Williams can be more successful?
4. Do you think that Quinn, in Cleveland, will get a staph infection while recovering from the alleged "hit" from another player?
5. As far as Plaxico goes- do you really believe someone who is a multi-millionaire, in New York, but keepting legal residence in Florida (could it be because of tax consequences?) really takes care of his own insurance needs? That person would have "people" (as in "real") to take care of those mundane tasks. Believe it- he'll throw some underling "under the bus" for this incident. Unless said underling is a former friend/hanger-on/entourage member. At which time, another underling will be expected to take the fall.
Matt - a little clarification on the McCarthy blaming the kicker thing. MM was asked about a couple of kicking issues in that game and basically responded that on the blocked kick, the kick was very low - which it was. McCarthy has never blamed Crosby specifically for the loss but there are some media types trying to portray that he has. You're correct that we obviously have some coaching issues in GB, but all he did was answer a question honestly in a press conference.
The bigger thing with McCarthy this week was his admission that when talking to the team, he only talks about winning, he doesn't talk about losing so he hasn't addressed the team about potentially losing to a 0-15 team.
If all he talks about with the team is winning, I guess he and the team haven't talked much this year.
Dem boys are down this week...one prediction you are wrong on man
Is Fortenbaugh posting under the name Sammy now?
Jerry - hate to correct you here, but McCarthy called out Crosby and yes, blamed him for the blocked field goal. You can listen to it during the press conf, and articles were on JSOnline and Packersnews.com. Let the blame game begin. It'll be even worse once they lose to the Lions on Sunday. Since McCarthy never takes blame for anything, after all his playcalling, coaching, and the scheme he and his team are playing is fine. As a longtime Packers fan, I can see the miserable times of the 70s and 80s coming back. I guess we should be lucky that we've had such a long, successful run during 90s and the last few years, but what is happening right now with this team, how easily they quit, and how badly they are coached, is really discouraging and downright disgusting.

Matt- I will be sure to provide a detailed account on Monday of the historic happenings at Lambeau this weekend. I broke down and bought a ticket and will be on the road at 6am sharp on Sunday to see the Lions fight for a victory. It's historic either way: 0-16 or first win there since '91. Down 20-13 late, Daniel Bullocks will channel Bennie Blades and take one to the house. Marinelli goes for two and Jim Colleto calls a QB draw. Lions lose 20-19.
