The Atlanta Falcons are “seriously considering” trading for veteran Pro Bowl tight end Tony Gonzalez, according to our own Michael Lombardi of the National Football Post.

Lombardi reports that the Falcons may be willing to give up their second round draft pick (#55 overall) in order to obtain the services of Gonzalez.
The move makes sense as Justin Peelle, the Falcons top tight end target from 2008, caught only 15 passes for 159 yards and 2 touchdowns in 16 games last season.
Meanwhile, Gonzalez is coming off another Pro Bowl season in which he hauled in 96 receptions for 1,058 yards and 10 touchdowns.
More on this story as it develops.
Agree completely Satori.
Frankly I'm a little surprised Lombardi would play this game...apparently somebody owed somebody a favor!
#55 isn't enough for the all time best tight end coming off his best season ever. Atlanta is going to have to come up with more to get Tony G.
Tony will be staying with the chiefs..KC wants and loves him. But we would trade Larry Johnson.
Thats retarded satori. Denial is ok. Its practically standard of procedure these days for something like this to be open to the public. It happens all the time. We'll gladly take gonsalez for a second round pick. lol.
Lakeside, it will take two teams, KC and someone else, to accomodate you and your wish for an LJ trade...good luck finding one at the price KC is wanting.
Lee, you're dead wrong. Satori is either a KC fan or else following the team closely. Pioli is cut from the Patriots mold in which all business is conducted under The Cone Of Silence.
It's quite likely that Pioli even goes so far as to impose a condition on any deal, or to any interviewee seeking a coaching position, that leaking information about their discussions with the Chiefs will automatically queer the deal.
Leakage is a fact of life for teams which either don't care or lack the skill to properly manage information and press relations.
Having had the latter situation during the reign of King Karl and The Herminator, I am overjoyed to see that cone of silence imposed, as well as the door slammed shut on anyone who wants to whine, or discuss said whining.
Go Chiefs!
MartyB in KC
Atlanta, along with Buffalo, was one of the two teams that Gonzalez outright refused a trade to at the trade deadline last season. If Gonzalez had wanted to play for the Falcons he would have been there in November. I cannot see what has radically changed in Atlanta between now and then to make it more attractive for him.
Calvert what changed since the last deadline. Matt Ryan, Michael Turner, Roddy White and a good o-line and they made it to the playoffs compared to the 2-14 chiefs. That will get anybodys attention. Considering he's been playing with garbage QBs since Trent Green. It would be the last piece Atlanta would need from going to the No.5 scoring offense to the No.1. Lots of things changed last year if you didn't notice. :)
Dats right Native Falcon. TELL HIM WHAT HAS CHANGE. CALVERT that was a bone head statement the League knows what has changed and it ain't the Chiefs
As a falcons fan I've been wanting Gonzalez for a while, and I would trade the 55 pick for him all day. I think the falcons should also throw Michael Vick in there to give you guys a chance this season. I know that he would be a big improvement. The deal itself Vick for Gonzalez make since for me by itself.
I am a huge Atlanta Falcons fan and if they can work out this deal with Gonzalez, this would be a major upgrade at the tight end position. He is a "pass catching" tight end, which they need going into the 2009 season. Unfortuantely, L.J. Smith did not work out. Gonzalez is a 5 time pro bowler with over 1,000 yards recieving last year. The closest guy on the falcons team had 159 yards recieving. Even though he is getting older in age, it would be great to have him for at least two to three years in order to give Matt Ryan a third option on offense! Come on Arthur Blank, bring Gonzalez to Atlanta! This move would definitely make them a playoff team come next season! GO FALCONS!!!

It would be highly unusual for Pioli or anybody he is dealing with to come out and talk about a move before it is done.
Pioli has the KC shop buttoned up tighter than tight and it wouldn't make any sense for Atlanta or any other team to talk about the deal before it was done.
What is more likely is that Pioli isn't happy with his current trade offers from other teams and is using his GM friend in Atlanta to up the ante in trade talks with other teams
I find it implausible that a team would broadcast both its interest and its offer prior to a deal being done.
They ( Chiefs) are just using Lombardi to further their agenda and up the perceived trade value of Gonzalez.
