From The National Football Post:
Sources close to the National Football Post have informed us that Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett has withdrawn his name from consideration for the vacant head coaching position in Detroit.
Our sources have informed us that Garrett decided to withdrawal his name after he spoke with officials from Dallas. More on this story as it develops.
The smart thing for Garrett to do is prove himself as an offensive coordinator, something he failed to do this season. I don't think he was a serious Lions candidate anyway. I mean, given the offensive meltdown, I cannot imagine Garrett's hiring would have inspired confidence in Detroit fans. If Shanahan comes in and cleans house, Garrett might have to take a sideways or backwards step, but I think he realizes this might be necessary. Had the Cowboys offense shone this year, things would be different.
Great analysis, Marc. And Garrett does have time on his side. He is still a young man.
He has so much to learn before he would ever be a good head coach and I am just not talking about play calling. To be honest his coaching style reminds me of another Ivy League Grad, Dick Jauron. I am not saying that is a problem but this team (Dallas) needs much more than that.
It seems to me that Garrett and Shanahan have a connection somehow. I don't remember if Garret was in Denver as a back up QB at some point. But I would think that Garrett and Shanahan could coexist as OC/HC. Personally, if Shanahan is going to coach next year (which I think is very much an open question) I would just as soon see him with the Cowboys. Not only could he have success, but he would be out of the Broncos' division and conference.
He is not dumb. Detroit is a coaches' graveyard. The owner is terrible, the front office is clueless...yet the owner supports front office decisions. Even when coaches protest the stupidity.
Wait and see who winds up in Detroit...it'll be someone nobody else wanted. They are a terrible organization.
Jason may think he will get bogged down like everyone else in Detroit. But I don't think he is as good of a coach as most seem to. He may want to take any job he can at this point before Jones cleans house.

Garrett is a funny bird. Like Kubiac before him, he seems to be reluctant to coach anywhere else but in one place. He may outsmart himself. After the offensive meltdown in Dallas, he may not be the favored heir apparant.
With Shannahan on the market, it would not suprise me to see Jerry Jones dump Phillips and go after him thus leaving Garrett waiting longer than expected and never getting the Dallas job like Kubiac never got the Denver job
