Jets activate David Garrard, cut Brady Quinn

The New York Jets activated quarterback David Garrard and cut quarterback Brady Quinn.'

Garrard was under a two-week roster exemption, but has overcome a knee injury that prompted him to retire in May two months since he signed a one-year contract with the Jets.

Garrard could provide guidance to rookie quarterback Geno Smith, the Jets' starter.

Garrard has been dealing with knee and back issues that have kept him from playing in a regular-season game since the 2010 season.

The 35-year-old could be the backup to Smith, who has been backed up lately by Matt Simms.

"I was able to take the whole summer off and let my body heal," Garrard said when he rejoined the team. "I started training a couple of months ago and my knee feels great. I'm sitting at home, watching games thinking, 'Why am I at home? Why am I doing this to myself?' I didn't want to have any regrets one day."
