Jets, Muhammad Wilkerson strike deal before deadline
The New York Jets beat the deadline, signing defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson to a five-year, $85 million deal.
The franchise player was originally due a $15.71 million franchise tender.
The Jets had until 4 p.m. Eastern to finish the deal. Otherwise, Wilkerson would have played the entire season under the tag.
The Pro Bowl defensive lineman led the Jets with 12 sacks last season.
He broke his right leg and had surgery after the season.
Wilkerson had 36 sacks in his first five seasons.
Wilkerson is a former first-round draft pick from Temple.
