Moss would appear to be the least likely of the three known candidates to talk with Al Davis about coaching the Raiders, trailing interim coach Tom Cable and Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride.
Green Bay essentially swept out its defensive staff _ including cornerbacks/nickel package coach Lionel Washington, who ended up in Oakland-but retained Moss. Moss is the linebackers coach and assistant head coach in Green Bay.
The Packers recently hired Dom Capers to revamp the defense and install a 3-4 scheme.
“(Moss) is a big part of our staff, the future of our staff,” McCarthy said, “and I think this will be an excellent pairing with Dom Capers and Winston Moss on defense.”
The Packers are considering hiring Keith Millard to coach their defensive linemen. Millard’s contract expired Jan. 13 and the Raiders have not made an effort to bring him back. The front-runner for that job appears to be former 49ers and Seattle line coach Dwaine Board.
I'm very excited at the prospect of Dom Capers taking over the helm in GB and that Moss might stay. I talked with a former player of Dom's in Miami and he had nothing but great things to say and said that the Pack made a great choice. Go Pack
Ultimately, McCarthy is doing Moss a favor. Hell, he might've done even more by declaring Moss wouldn't go to the Raiders in ANY capacity. If Moss doesn't think so, he should give Lane Kiffin a quick buzz.
From any of the guys around here in the know - Mr. Brandt, Mr. Lombardi, Mr. Bowen, and others - I'd love to know your opinion on Moss.
Even living in Wisconsin it's difficult to find a whole lot of information about him. We know McCarthy must value his presence on the staff to make him assistant head coach in addition to his linebacker coach position. He survived the purging of the defensive staff. Now McCarthy is sending a message to Oakland regarding his services.
Obviously the Packers must think very highly of him. What's his claim to fame? A good motivator? A player's coach? An innovator?
What are the thoughts around league circles on Moss?
I am more curious about the "future of our staff" comment. What exactly does that mean? Especially when Moss has made it clear he has higher aspirations. Is Capers only a short term hire with the intent of Moss taking over? I am sure Moss wants more than to be Linebackers coach and assistant head coach or whatever that meaningless title is.
favrefromover- you are looking way too far into things. just sit back and take a break from it all for a while. all I took from what mccarthy said is that he plans on retaining Moss unless he gets a HC offer. see, this is what those Nic Cage movies do to people.
I am also curious what makes Moss so intriguing. guess we'll have to wait and see how the defense plays.
Like my other fellow Wisconsinites and Packer fans, I too wonder what makes Winston Moss so well protected by everyone in the Packer organization. Nothing against him, I just don't get it. McCarthy's statements are a bit much, aren't they?
IMHO, I think Moss is one of the only (if the THEE only) "motivating", or "players coaches" on GBs staff.
McCarthy thinks very highly of him, but I'm guessing he doesn't think he's ready for a coordinator position quite yet. Moss has even admitted to being behind the curve X's and O's wise.

Yikes! Keith Millard ... isn't he an old Viking? It seems like half the Minnesota staff has Wisconsin ties, and a bunch of their players are ex-Packers. Is this our way of getting even?
