Mike
I know for some reason you're not a huge fan of Matt Schaub, but even you have to admit that in his last three starts he looks like a legit NFL QB.
Do you still think the Texans would be better with Sage Rosenfels out there Favring away games in the 4th quarter?
Neither the Jets OR the Raiders should be proud of their performance yesterday. Even thogh the Raiders won, Cable (if he is honest with himself) has to be very, very disapointed with that performance. Generally a win is a win in the NFL, but that only applies when a team makes some sort of progress on the field. In my opinjion the Raiders are getting worse week after week......without many key injuries! I was at the game and had to check my ticket stub 3 times in the 1st half to make sure I was at the right place. At one point in the 2nd qrtr, I was sure the refs were blowing their whistles to re-start the game. Sadly, it was just another offsides penalty by the Raiders D-line. Both teams hurt themselves with penalties and turnovers, and my guess is that Russell and Favre didnt attempt a pass in the 1st half over 25 yds....maybe one!
How does a home team commit 14 penalties and have a %23 3rd down conversion AT HOME? It takes serious "commitment to something" to turn in a day like that.
Bad luck with the injuries & the gamble w/PacMan for Dallas. Tank just got into the news as well didn't he? Team sounds undisciplined & got too wrapped up in the Hollywood scene before the season & in themselves not focusing on the business at hand. Can they hold it together until they get back their key injured players? Are they better off in coverage w/o Roy Williams?
Tons of problems with the Niners.....
Mike - I know experts say it's not a good move to make a coaching change in the middle of the season. Do you think that applies to the Niners??
I am interested in your thoughts on the comment below:
According to Kansas City Star writer Jason Whitlock, Chiefs first-round pick Glenn Dorsey has been a bust through seven weeks.
Also, do you think Herm Edwards is getting a free pass here? Whitlock loves to beat up on Carl Peterson, and deservedly so, but what happened to a tough nosed defensive coach?
You're exactly right Lombardi, the Colts and Lions are two teams, that if possible, must have the lead if they are to excel. I heard Rod Marinelli's press conference about a half hour ago on ESPN News and I admire him for his optimistic lookout. Lions brass should not give up on Marinelli. Next season, they will be a winning team and perhaps over the course of the next few weeks, they can lay the foundation for long-term success. The Packers' defense is better than I thought. They're a bunch of ball-hawking studs! Finally, how about those Titans. They epitomize Jeff Fisher in every way, they're classy, they get the job done and they beat the tar out of their opponent. Hopefully, my Broncos improve to 5-2 tonight! As cliche' as this is coming from me, you have a great blog here and I learn a lot!
The Rams were in the Cowboy play book to start that game. First pass attempt, outside leverage on the TE with the strong safety to take away Witten. Witten bracketed with two LB after that so Owens could be doubled with a safety. Williams and Owens both doubled from base sets on passing downs. The very first Johnson quick was jumped all over, they baited him into that throw and kept outside leverage on the player to the right flat so he'd perhaps force it somewhere and the trick worked, Haslett deserves major credit as does his DC for being ahead of the calls the entire first half.
Dallas must establish some backfield catches to take the focus off their LOS players. The Rams used their entire D line rotation effectively, when no90 went out the other rotation numbers picked up the slack. Leonard Little played possessed, he even chased down catches upfield to force fumbles. Haslett has them doing the men's work and it allows his back seven to cover max. They mixed some specialty blitzes in on some Dallas specialty sets, they changed the back four coverage almost every play in the first quarter.
Stephen Jackson patted Tony Romo on the head during a sideline run during the game. He absolutely bristled at it, sitting there with his cowboys cap on. Jackson got hurt shortly after that.
Watching Jackson and Barber III out cave man one another was great. Dallas gave up on its run game first. Both those guys punish tacklers, but Barber stays low when he does it, Jackson stays upright a bit too much at times. Witten and Owens were both bracketed. They started motioning Witten to get him off the bracket and he made a catch but was given a tickey tackey penalty on the illegal motion call. When Romo is there they would have responded the next play and not missed a beat, without him it can't be done to that degree. Dallas gave up two first day picks for no catches opposite those two star targets. They missed backfield catches from Felix as well, his being out saw them try and work the fullback but they got few yards off that(not west coast types of targets). That first rounder may be needed to match comp for a player like Nnamdi in the coming year...

I thought the Niners defense played well yesterday, Manny Lawson looked healthy and active, forget the FG block which was spectacular, he got his hands on a number of Manning passes. But their offense, oy vey. JTO just can't protect the ball.
Favre may have under duress yesterday but he threw so many awful, high risk, up for grabs passes I lost count. It was typical Favre, only the Raiders DBs have manos de piedras and couldn't catch a cold.
I predicted the Bengals would start off 1-10 with Palmer, so not much difference with Fitzpatrick.
