NFL TALK TODAY…
1. Do you think the reason that Shawne Merriman is going to try and play when all four doctors told him to get the surgery is because he has an incentive in his contract for 2 million dollars? Call me cynical, but you have to wonder. And I wonder if the team is going to ask him to sign something to say he is playing against the recommendations of the medical staff. I hope Shawne does not cause himself further injury and can handle this seemingly impossible challenge.
2. We thought Baltimore was a little thin at QB and claiming Casey Bramlet makes sense. Cam Cameron had him in Miami and being in a similar system with Norv Turner of the Chargers, Bramlett can come in, learn the snap count, and play.
3. Thankfully Derrick Harvey can resume his career. Signing today is good for both parties and now he can concentrate on learning how to rush the passer. If used exclusively as a pass rusher, Harvey may be able to contribute as a nickel and dime player.
4. I mentioned a few posts ago that The National Football Post is looking for head high school coaches who do an amazing job with their teams. Rivals.com will rate all the top high schools in the U.S. Is there anything better than high school football on a Friday night? Send us your recommendations and we will follow their progress. By the way, I am always a Raider. My son plays for the high school team call the Red Raiders. You just never can leave that Hotel....
TOP HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL RANKINGS IN AMERICA
5. I was talking to a GM in the league today and even he was surprised that the Packers still refuse to bring in a veteran QB to back up and help Rodgers. I think it is a dangerous move and Green Bay needs to hope Rodgers can hold up. Risky business here.
6. I hear the Redskins will move offensive lineman Steven Heyer over to right tackle and may give him a chance to start. Jon Jansen, the normal right tackle, is not healthy and there are problems there. Signing Fred Miller does not solve those problems either.
7. I watched the Detroit Lions offensive line today and was very impressed with their toughness and temperament. I was even more impressed with Gosder Cherlius, who looks like he can play right or left tackle. He is going to be very good.
8. Did anyone see Charles Barkley at the Democratic National Convention last night? You have to love the guy for his love of this country and saying what he feels. The truth comes right from Sir Charles.
9. SI is running the article AFC Team Totals, which speculates the number of wins each team will have at the end of the season. For example, the article estimates that the New York Jets will win eight games. Incredibly, the Jets' total increased by only one half of a win after the Brett Favre trade was announced. That should give you some idea of just how absurd all the hype was. The two new faces at guard, Alan Faneca and Damien Woody, should help, but there doesn't look to be much value in either side of this number.
10. Enjoy the Democratic speeches tonight and make sure you register to vote. If you read anything on the election you need to make sure you read Mr. Friedman’s column today. And I am not for one side or another I am on the U.S. side. This always makes really good Tavern Talk. Cheers!
I agree, we will all miss gene...
Item three, Harvey is back to being a football player, all is right with the Jags football world for the moment with this good news.
Item four, you could put every coach in America doing that at the HS level up for consideration, to good extent.
Item four and seven seem to match. You talked to a GM, surprised about GB not signing a vet, and were watching Cherlius at Lions practice.
Gosder was amazing at BC, and that program has really helped elevate some great linemen to playing at the next level. He can even lead sweeps and screens upfield.
As for the SI story on a website that rates teams chances, that's for stats junkies. It's in the realm of passer premium stats, something that tries to make more out of average yardage per play than is really there.
It is what it is. There's all kinds of factors at play, from changes in organizations and coaches, to free agency and cap factors, to the chance of who has the most home games in a bad weather division or travels the most between the coasts or has consecutive home, away, or divisional games.
The league scheduling is supposed to dilute some of that in who you face, but some of the above factors position division teams more favorably once again, at key junctures.
Most of points eight and ten I missed. I'll visit a friend's blog who was there and see what he says.
Re: Merriman: Could the Chargers put him on the PUP or DL list against his wishes? At some point you have to save this guy from himself.
Re: Lions improved OL: Kitna may be an underrated QB and with those receivers, and fewer sacks, he could do some damage.
Re: Packers not signing a backup: Ted Thompson has utterly mishandled the quarterback sitution in Green Bay on so many levels.
I wonder how much of an effect, if any, Philip Rivers decision to play with a significant knee injury during the playoffs last year is having on Merriman's choice. Perhaps he feels he'll lose some respect in te locker room if he doesn't at least attempt to play.
AJ Smith and Norv Turner want Merriman to play. Smith just locked up his back-up, Tucker and has no plans of giving him big money in '09 so their is no downside for them. There has been nothing but condescending and critical remarks from Smith about off season activites, Merriman's tv spot on Thursday's during the season as well as his multi-opinion quest. I think they played his competitive nature and love for the game against him and bullied him on the field on one leg. Mike, am I wrong about the cold fish Smith?
Mike, regarding the Green Bay QB situation (Packer fan here), don't you think it's possible that Thompson is waiting for someone to get cut, like a Chris Simms? While that person would be coming in at the end, at least they wouldn't have to give anything up to get him.
May I suggest this site stay far away from political talk?
"Did anyone see Charles Barkley at the Democratic National Convention last night? You have to love the guy for his love of this country and saying what he feels. The truth comes right from Sir Charles."
If that is your version of "truth" then you've got major problems...
Bernie-
agreed, we've got major problems, and we're gonna fix them in November! *thumbs up*
I am a Packers fan, I think we have made our bed with our QB situation. If Rodgers plays well and doesnt get injured there is really no issue. If he gets injured we are up a creek with no paddle and a boat with holes in it. I think the reasoning (and I have had this debate a million times on various Packers message boards) is that Brhom and Flynn offer much more for the future of the team if they work out well. Daunte Cullpepper (just for example) has no future for the Packers. He would just take practice reps away from the young guys. Should Rodgers get hurt, the Packers are probably looking at 4-6 wins regardless if we sign veteran free agent X or keep Brohm and Flynn. So I ask, why not at least develop players that can offer you something in coming years rather than signing a guy who is 30 something and doesnt have an NFL job right now for a reason?
And re: Chris Simms... oh please God no!
In reading all the posts (even the political ones) I couldnt agree more with the one that Dave posted. Too many times teams think they have to have a veteran quarterback when all hell breaks loose and who is that veteran quarterback???? Someone that generally cant play. I do remember one time when the Packers did go into the season with three quarterbacks that had a combined ZERO NFL starts (Favre, Burnell, Detmer) and that seemed to work out OK. Let the young guys play and at least try to develop. If not, you will get the opportunity to draft one the next year with the 3rd overall pick and maybe he can play (Matt Ryan?)
bernie...i love that Barkley speaks his mind, not with everything he says. And the one thing about this great country is we can speak our mind. some choose to not say anything of substance for fear of being ridiculed.

This is all an attempt to get ahead of any league tests IMO. Doctors can prescribe varied items as part of a surgery schedule. Postponing the date might open a wide window for him to pee cloudy...
Also, the lack of an agreement past a certain time could also open him a window of postponing suspension. That's what my counsel would argue if we wanted to get paid start money at this time....
People will regret Upshaw's passing to deeper levels when they realize what he helped hold together with the respect his career commanded.
For what it's worth, the use of enhancers is an occupational exposure, it should be monitored and accepted within a threshold. Especially if these guys are going to 18 game seasons. Let's address this as a professional work concern and get doctors on the side of regulation.
Or, let's do like basebalk, ignore the problem, and make star athletes risk perjury at committee hearings. Think Tom Brady and Barry Bond's trainer would like to come back for any testimony and hold the NFL to the kind of extortion threats and backroom whizzinator stuff like he did for MLB?
