NFL TALK TODAY…
1. Do you think the reason that Shawne Merriman is going to try and play when all four doctors told him to get the surgery is because he has an incentive in his contract for 2 million dollars? Call me cynical, but you have to wonder. And I wonder if the team is going to ask him to sign something to say he is playing against the recommendations of the medical staff. I hope Shawne does not cause himself further injury and can handle this seemingly impossible challenge.
2. We thought Baltimore was a little thin at QB and claiming Casey Bramlet makes sense. Cam Cameron had him in Miami and being in a similar system with Norv Turner of the Chargers, Bramlett can come in, learn the snap count, and play.
3. Thankfully Derrick Harvey can resume his career. Signing today is good for both parties and now he can concentrate on learning how to rush the passer. If used exclusively as a pass rusher, Harvey may be able to contribute as a nickel and dime player.
4. I mentioned a few posts ago that The National Football Post is looking for head high school coaches who do an amazing job with their teams. Rivals.com will rate all the top high schools in the U.S. Is there anything better than high school football on a Friday night? Send us your recommendations and we will follow their progress. By the way, I am always a Raider. My son plays for the high school team call the Red Raiders. You just never can leave that Hotel....
TOP HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL RANKINGS IN AMERICA
5. I was talking to a GM in the league today and even he was surprised that the Packers still refuse to bring in a veteran QB to back up and help Rodgers. I think it is a dangerous move and Green Bay needs to hope Rodgers can hold up. Risky business here.
6. I hear the Redskins will move offensive lineman Steven Heyer over to right tackle and may give him a chance to start. Jon Jansen, the normal right tackle, is not healthy and there are problems there. Signing Fred Miller does not solve those problems either.
7. I watched the Detroit Lions offensive line today and was very impressed with their toughness and temperament. I was even more impressed with Gosder Cherlius, who looks like he can play right or left tackle. He is going to be very good.
8. Did anyone see Charles Barkley at the Democratic National Convention last night? You have to love the guy for his love of this country and saying what he feels. The truth comes right from Sir Charles.
9. SI is running the article AFC Team Totals, which speculates the number of wins each team will have at the end of the season. For example, the article estimates that the New York Jets will win eight games. Incredibly, the Jets' total increased by only one half of a win after the Brett Favre trade was announced. That should give you some idea of just how absurd all the hype was. The two new faces at guard, Alan Faneca and Damien Woody, should help, but there doesn't look to be much value in either side of this number.
10. Enjoy the Democratic speeches tonight and make sure you register to vote. If you read anything on the election you need to make sure you read Mr. Friedman’s column today. And I am not for one side or another I am on the U.S. side. This always makes really good Tavern Talk. Cheers!
The funny thing abuot US politics is that both parties have their hands in the same lobbyist cookie jar.
The sad thing is, we no longer have a government for the people; but one that is out to line their own pockets and the decisions are made by lobbyists. Our politicians are so out of touch with the reality of our society because they are more concerned about their own well-being, elite, power status than the benefits of our country. Which is why Healthcare, Social Security/Retirement, and Education remain the Nation's top concern after 6 elections.
This holds true, not only in the political realm, but the judicial realm; as we've seen with the likes of the 9th Circus Court passing laws against the results of 3 public votes.
If we are truly going to "change" our country, WE THE PEOPLE need to make that change, not the political system, corporations, and lobbyists.
The only way this will happen is if we call our representatives and demand LESS Federal Government regulations in these areas. Time to give the power back to where the power belongs....To the People of the U.S.A.
RE: high school football programs
Check out the legacy of Valdosta, Georgia's program. Between the city and the county team (Lowndes County), they consistently field powerhouse teams and churn out players. It's a microcosm of a thousand little communities who live and breathe the autumn rituals of small-town, high school football.
Michael and Patrick, Mr. Friedman's article, not to mention the endorsement of it is extremely naive in my opinion. Quite frankly, it is reminiscent of a sad state of affairs that unfortunately continues to rear its ugly head. If you wish the U.S. to go in the direction of China, then you should educate yourself on the inner workings of the entire country and not just the facade of the Olympics. It's true that China has made some important reforms in it's economy and social structure, but have you forgotten that it is a Communist country and all that goes a long with that. It still has strategic industries and services under state ownership and control. There is alot of oppression that occurs in their world. Look to Taiwan, The Republic of China for direction, a democracy and free country and a per capita GDP of $16,590 (40th in the world) or better yet how about the U.S. with a per capita GDP of $43,444, 4th in the world. Looking at a communist country to take lessons from? - no thanks. By the way China's per capita GDP - $2,000 (107th in the world). China's recent reforms and transitions are about becoming more like the U.S. They have looked to our system and way of live for direction and imitation, not the other way around.
Give me a break !
Because I thought he brought up some interesting points I'm being naive ? Your arrogance is beyond belief. You can tell where I stand on the issues because I recommended his article ? Way to keep an open mind.
Regarding Merriman, keep in mind he has to play against 3 of the 4 dirtiest teams in the NFL; the Chiefs, Broncos, and Raiders (the 4th team he plays on). His "gamble" will not pay off. Week 2 is the first Division game for the Chargers against the Broncos. Then Week 4 against the Raiders.
Now answer this question, does he seriously think that either team (Broncos and Raiders) will not cut block him?
Sam,
You missed the entire point of the Friedman article. Or more likely you are simply trying to confuse the conversation in respect to it in order to steer it the way you want. You are obviously on the side of the status quo, and therefore in my opinion, you are part of the problem.
Friedman simply points out that the Chinese were able to accomplish all that they did in the same time we have pissed away resources for a war based on lies and made up intelligence.
Head Friedman's warnings. We need to change direction in this country if we are going to continue to lead in the world. That's all.
Friedman made no claims that Communism is a good thing or Democracy is not. In fact he went out of his way to point out the opposite, but you still come up with the crackpot response you posted here. Time to get real man.
Hey guys this is a football blog.
Cant find where the list is for High School HC is but here is one of the best around. John Dibiaso HC Everett High School, Everett MA. Has one of the best programs around Mike and just keeps winning year after year and does not have huge numbers to work with as far as city population. Put him on your list to check out, you will be impressed. Not sure he has lost 5-7 games all decade and must have 4-5 state D1 titles and Superbowl wins. Has to be one of the best HCs we have and is GREAT with the kids in all areas.

Great Article by Mr. Friedman, everyone should read it. Even if you are on opposite sides of the fence as far as which candidate, you cannot argue his point about the different directions our countries have taken.
