FIVE THINGS I KNOW….

1.     I know that, barring some amazing healing, LT won’t be able to play this week against the Steelers.  The running game, along with the Chargers’ future, lies in the hands of running back Darren Sproles.

2.     I know that the Seattle defensive staff is in limbo and has been told to look for work.  Dwain Board, the Seahawks’ defensive line coach, has left the team.  Many more changes are coming.

3.     I know that Raiders offensive coordinator Greg Knapp, who was stripped of his play-calling duties by Tom Cable, will be in Seattle next week once his current contract expires.

4.     I know that Bill Johnson, the Broncos’ defensive line coach, is scheduled to meet with the Saints, Seahawks and Packers this week.   And his meeting with the Packers will center on the 3-4.  Going back and forth between the 3-4 and the 4-3 is not hard to do if you have someone who can play over center, and the Packers do in Ryan Pickett.

5.     I know if Jason Garrett gets the head coaching job in Denver, he wants Dom Capers of the Patriots, and formerly of the Dolphins, as his defensive coordinator.

FIVE THINGS I HEAR….

1.    I hear that some Jets employees are calling Randy Lerner of the Browns to recommend Eric Mangini.  The longer this goes on, the more worried Mangini should be that Lerner is interviewing other people.  There are rumblings that other coaches are being called for interviews.

2.     I hear the Packers are committed to becoming a 3-4 defense. This must mean Mike Nolan is coming on board very soon.

3.     I hear the Lions are looking to talk with Atlanta offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey about becoming their head coach.  This might be good news since all the good young quarterbacks -- Matthew Stafford of Georgia, Josh Freeman of Kansas State and Sam Bradford of Oklahoma -- will soon declare for the NFL Draft.

4.     I hear the Eagles are not going to stand in the way if Tom Heckert is able to convince Randy Lerner that he should be the Browns’ general manager.

5.     I hear the Raiders are just getting started on their coaching search, and many people in and out of the NFL feel that this is Tom Cable’s job.  I happen to agree.

Interesting. I read somewhere (possibly even on NFP, or otherwise on SI.com) that McDaniels is favourite for the Broncos job, not Garrett, and that McDaniels too would bring Capers as his defensive coordinator!

Gotta love the rumour mill!

Interesting that Jason Garett wants Dom Capers as his DC, like McDaniels.

Looks like odds are Denver is going to a 3-4. If you are going to rebuild the defense might as well strip the scheme too.

Michael, do you think Capers could build a decent 3-4 defense for next season?

Michael,
Magini doesn't have to worry anymore. Schefter just reported on NFL Network that Mangini hired as HC in Cleveland. Press conf is set for tom @ 10 am.

Does it make any sense for the Browns to be hiring their head coach and GM separately? Why not hire a GM first and then a head coach? This process seems a bit backward...

I don't know about Cleveland but Denver is doing the same thing. There is talk that the set up will be that both the coach and the GM will report to Pat (the owner) and that personnel decisions will be made by "comittee". With Pat being the tie breaker.

Apparently there are a few NFL orgnizations that have a set up resembling this.

Mike:
I question how you can say the Packers have somebody to play over the nose with Ryan Pickett.
Pickett has always played along side another big fella in a 4-3 and he isn't Jamal Williams, Ted Washington or the Goose.
I wonder what Pickett thinks about your suggestion that he's now double teamed every down and a two gap NT.

I think if the Packers really want to play 3-4, they need another guy,.....and he'll have to be much more of a monster than Pickett.

Bringing in Capers, with head coaching and playoff experience, would be a major move for garret and give him a lot of background support and insight to game and personnel siuations.

Can you link us the show appearance here, Mike? It would help your site a lot in search engine ratings....

Based on Bowlen's press conference where he said the Broncos will absolutely get the best candidate available, do you think he will wait until after the conference championships do make a hire?

Hi Michael, I agree that Uncle Al will keep Tom Cable in place as H/C...is that 6 or 7 new H/C's since Chuckie...wow. The biggest question that goes with this decision is whether Al will dicate who his coaching staff will be. Will he retain Rob ( I can't hold a candle to my brother Rex) Ryan or will he be allowed to fire the worst defensive coordinator of all time. If he is forced to keep Ryan isn't this going to further undermine his situation right from the beginning. Do you have any inling as to how Cable sees Ryan???

Raiderlifer,
Rob Ryan will be gone, and is already reported that he is gone with Mangini to the Browns. I don't think Ryan has any intention to stay, just like Knapp.
If he does hire Cable as HC, I think we could see Cable bring in his own staff (the way Madden did). If he does, I hope Cable gives Jeff Jagodzinski a call about being Offensive Coordinator.
