FROM MICHAEL LOMBARDI:

FIVE THINGS I HEAR...

1.     I hear the ‘Skins might open the big wallets to try and acquire Carolina offensive tackle Jordan Gross when he becomes a free agent in March.  They will have a ton of competition.

2.     I hear that defensive end Julius Peppers is not even close to a new deal with the Panthers and undoubtedly will be franchised, which will not sit very well with him. Mr. Peppers is planning his next move when that happens

3.     I hear the Browns and several other teams will chase Denver special teams coach Scott O’Brien, who is one of the best in the NFL, not only coaching special teams but handling game management situations.

4.     I hear some of the candidates for the KC front office position are being told today they are no longer candidates -- either a sign that Scott Pioli is coming or they are no longer in the mix.

5.     I hear that, in spite of the difference in salary between his current job and a potential head coaching position, Jason Garrett is prepared to take one of them unless Jerry Jones does something.

FIVE THINGS I KNOW...

1.     I know that the Lions have expressed some interest in bringing in a veteran personnel man to help their front office and have contacted former Browns GM Phil Savage to gauge his interest in joining them.

2.     I know that Colts defensive coordinator Ron Meeks in is the Jets’ building today having an interview for their head coaching spot.  Yesterday, after meeting with Cardinals assistant head coach Russ Grimm in Phoenix, they met with Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh.

3.     I know the Browns put in a request an interview Colts assistant GM Chris Polian for their vacant GM post.

4.     I know that Minnesota is going to explore every possible idea for a starting quarterback.  The Vikings know they need to make the move there; Tarvaris Jackson’s days as a starter are over in the Twin Cities.

5.     I know it’s a good thing when the President-elect of the United States cares about a playoff system in college football, but I do think the Gators have a fair claim to the No. 1 spot.

Obama has more important things to worry about than a playoff in college football. Leave college football alone.

AS much as I hate the BCS I have to agree with Matt. Worry about fixing the economy, getting jobs back, ending wars before you worry about a meaningless college football game.

Those of us in GB are happy to see Tavaris in Minnesota and even Happier Childress will remain another year. They have the most talented person in the league and they have already wasted two years.

great notes. everyone would love to have peppers

Yes, because the fact that a man would take a moment to comment on the state of collegiate football's postseason has anything to do with how much time he spends working on economical/world issues.

God forbid he allows himself some leisure time, that hour of work could mean all the difference in saving the world.

If O'Brien is so highly regarded why did Denver's special teams stink?

If the Raiders are letting the Speical Teams coach go...(he's never stayed a place long than a couple of seasons recently).

Sounds like the plan is to weaken the rival....

Mike, who do you think has the inside track on the Packers Defensive Coordinator job? I know all about the friendship between Nolan and Mccarthy but Williams is clearly the better guy for the job. If Williams is hired, I fully expect Hawk to get to that dominant level we all thought he could get to. I just hope we make a decision soon before either of these guys get away.

As a Pats fan, I think Meeks going to the Jets would be somewhat concerning. I mean, he already knows us as well as if we'd played in the same division over the past few years. Let's not forget that despite the amusing end-of-season collapse, the Jets were still an above .500 team this year. Sure, they've got problems, but nothing insurmountable. The East is going to be one hell of a division next year.

Mike L - any chance NFP could do a piece about what Plaxico's options might be, in light of the story that he's been told to keep away from their training facility and stadium. If he's on his way out (and assuming he avoids jail), which teams might take a gamble on him?

Who did Min pick in the second round last year?? Did he contribute as much as Sage Rosenfels would have as their starting QB??

Guys, Obama's not prez, yet. Let him enjoy a bit of release from the stress of trying to unf**k eight years of mismanagement. Isn't that what we all look to sports for, a bit of relaxation after a hard day browsin' teh interwebs for porn and football news?

Utah has an even bigger claim to the title.
