FROM MICHAEL LOMBARDI:

FIVE THINGS I HEAR...

1.     I hear the ‘Skins might open the big wallets to try and acquire Carolina offensive tackle Jordan Gross when he becomes a free agent in March.  They will have a ton of competition.

2.     I hear that defensive end Julius Peppers is not even close to a new deal with the Panthers and undoubtedly will be franchised, which will not sit very well with him. Mr. Peppers is planning his next move when that happens

3.     I hear the Browns and several other teams will chase Denver special teams coach Scott O’Brien, who is one of the best in the NFL, not only coaching special teams but handling game management situations.

4.     I hear some of the candidates for the KC front office position are being told today they are no longer candidates -- either a sign that Scott Pioli is coming or they are no longer in the mix.

5.     I hear that, in spite of the difference in salary between his current job and a potential head coaching position, Jason Garrett is prepared to take one of them unless Jerry Jones does something.

FIVE THINGS I KNOW...

1.     I know that the Lions have expressed some interest in bringing in a veteran personnel man to help their front office and have contacted former Browns GM Phil Savage to gauge his interest in joining them.

2.     I know that Colts defensive coordinator Ron Meeks in is the Jets’ building today having an interview for their head coaching spot.  Yesterday, after meeting with Cardinals assistant head coach Russ Grimm in Phoenix, they met with Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh.

3.     I know the Browns put in a request an interview Colts assistant GM Chris Polian for their vacant GM post.

4.     I know that Minnesota is going to explore every possible idea for a starting quarterback.  The Vikings know they need to make the move there; Tarvaris Jackson’s days as a starter are over in the Twin Cities.

5.     I know it’s a good thing when the President-elect of the United States cares about a playoff system in college football, but I do think the Gators have a fair claim to the No. 1 spot.

I think wherever Jason ends up his next employerer will thank him.:) As Robert says, a coach is usually better the second time around.

yea im pretty sure obama has the bcs ahead of the current financial crisis...way to thinly veil your partisanship 2 commenters at the top. if gwb was on that train you'd probably be slobbering all over it. it's not like he's ever said it's more important than ANYTHING that actually matters to us as americans. at least he's saying something about something alot of people think is shitty. he cares about what we care about, even if it is just posturing...maybe it will force someones hand to get something done.

also, if the vikings DO get a qb that can do something remotely like the job say a joe flacco did this year i'm terrified of that team.

Minnesota should pony up and get Cassel.... Call Belichick and pay that man his money....

Utah wins on meritocracy, Florida wins on reputation. Interesting too how Ute alumn Jordon Gross seems to be the prototypical SEC player I keep reading about...

And if it's March then it must be time for Dan Snyder to make a bold marketing move to sell season tickets.

Cassell has had one good year. Does Derek Anderson ring a bell. Cassell is also a one year wonder. Look what has happened to Culpepper without Moss. Minn should go for Hasselback.

Look at how they ran Marty out of DC when Snyder had them buried alive under the cap. He could firn Zorn on a whim by week three enxt year. Gross has a great coaching crew with him in Carolina. If you look at the big picture, staying where he is should result in better long term security.

Mikal,
It's so easy to say that Cassel is a "one hit" wonder but if you take a closer look you would see that Derek Anderson has always had an accuracy problem, Cassel does not. Anderson has a career comp pct of 54.6% in the pros and it was closer to 50% in college. For NFL QB's, accuracy should be priority #1. That's why the two aren't even comparable.

MIN with Frerotte as QB probably would have beat PHI. Jackson should prepare for being a lifetime backup. Maybe he just needs more time to develop behind a veteran QB.

The Vikings can search for new quarterbacks all they want as long as they keep Coach Klink prowling the sidelines. As I watched the Vikings lose their playoff game, I noted that once again the Vikings' best player spent the final minutes of the game standing on the sidelines next to the said Klink. If blitz pickups and screen passes are Peterson's weaknesses, how in the name of two full seasons has Childress failed to play to Peterson's strengths and gotten the Purple Jesus onto the field in some manner during crunch time? Why not put Peterson in the slot and have him run some drag and crossing routes? Get him the ball in space with a full head of steam. Why not line him up in a split backfield with Chester Taylor and release him into the flat, or set him in a H-back spot off tackle and get him upfield? As a defender, who'd you rather cover in the slot, Adrian Peterson or Bobby Wade?

Give the Vikings the next Joe Montana as long as Coach Klink Childress treads the white stripe.

Regarding Obama, his call for a playoff was in response to a reporter's question. Obama didn't call a press conference to discuss the BCS, nor is it on his agenda as a top priority.

Matt - I'd argue that it could be worth Obama's time to influence a change in college football.

I'd bet there is a lot of wasted time spent debating, reading and thinking about the BCS issue which probably leads to productivity losses (similar to fantasy football).

A change could lift the economy, though probably nominally..

Seriously... Denver special teams are atrocious. O'Brien is good at game management? The decision to pooch kick twice in the 4th quarter to Buffalo played a huge role in that loss, and they gave up huge returns all year long - so bad that Champ Bailey has now played special teams for two years in a row. Maybe some of the problems have to do with personnel decisions that O'Brien had nothing to do with, but the Denver kickoff and punt coverage is consistently some of the worst in the league

Packer Pete, that makes to much sense. The guy is a moron.
